Hey Guys,

Swapping from Orcons LLU (their own equipment) in Wellington, to SNAP (Which I assume uses Telecoms wholesale).

Heres a map of my address (actually the apartment building at 51 Webb St).

Location

Does this mean as im outside the purple area that I will just be on copper up the road to courtney place? (prob a good 200-300 metres away), or will I get thrown on that cabinet at the end of the street?

Am I likely to get simlar speeds (18mb/s) on SNAP as I was on Orcon based on the above map? (Leaving Orcon due to peak time speed issues). Im a bit confused! Should I ask to be put on the cabinet? Does SNAP benefit from being on the cabinet, or am I best just being piped straight to the exchange?

Cheers!

Lammi

You will only be served from the exchange and will always be - the areas that are either being served (or will be served) by cabinets are purple.

Thanks! And is this likely due to the fact im so close to the exchange theres no point cabnitising my area?

Also will SNAP be using Telecoms hardware?

Sorry about all my silly questions, you've helped heaps already!

If you are within 1.5km - 2km from away from an exchange you will always be served by that. There is no need for a cabinet. SNAP only ever use Telecom Wholesale equipment, they do not have any gear installed to take advantage of ULL.

I don't mean to hijack the thread too much, but is there an easy way to tell whether you're currently connected to a cabinet? There's a cabinet about 50 m from my work, the exchange hasn't been upgraded for ADSL2+, and we get about 7 Mb/s. Would that indicate that we're on the cabinet, using ADSL1?

The map on Telecom Wholesale's site lists my home address as being inside a cabinet area (with ADSL2+ upgrade due to happen within a year), but again, how do I know whether I'm actually connected to the cabinet or not? My speeds are quite poor (about 3.5 Mb/s) so I'm guessing that it's still backtracking all the way to the main exchange but I'd like to confirm this if possible.

The wholesale map tells you everything - when and when the cabinet will go active and what equipment is in there.

If you're on a whisper cabinet you will have ADSL2+, I suspect at your work the cabinet isn't live or you're not actually fed from it.

Hi Clayton, as steve has already pointed out you are around 1.5km from Courtney place exchange, so your speeds should remain good on SNAP (only in relation to the DSL leg anyway) although dont be surprised that the sync speed may be somewhat less (more like 14-16Mb/s compared to Orcons network simply because Telecom target more conservative noise margins that improve line stability at the sacrifice of some speed, however other than that you will be on the same copper tail just different DSLAM port.

Thanks Cyrill! Appreciate the response :) Thats good in a way, as I would prefer it to be stable and 16 mb/s than they way it is now at around 18mb/s but full of speed drops.

Man, Nakeddsl is such a pain! Swaping from Orcons LLU network to SNAP hasn't been fun. Heres the steps I had to do:

1) Call SNAP tell them I don;t have a line phone number. Be advised I need to get an ASID from Orcon.
2) Call Orcon and get my ASID
2) Call SNAP and signup
4) Request for service gets denied, due to my ACID not being on wholesale equipment
5) Call SNAP, they say they cannot port me off Orcons equipment, until Orcon issue a "disconnect" order to disconnect my line from their equipment.
6) Call Orcon, terminate my account, have them guess a day that the disconnection will happen.
7) Call SNAP organize for the line to be provisioned on the same day as the disconnection,

Fingers crossed no downtime. I don't know why SNAP can't organize for Orcon to release my line and allow it to be hooked up to SNAP. Hopefully theres not much downtime between the two, all happening tomorrow (WoW server maintenence anyway haha)

Its either that or paying $224 to get SNAP on a new pair hooked up to my line while we wait for Orcon to disconnect! I don't think its quite worth that price.

Anyone else had experience with this? Things likely to go smooth?

Haha

Clayton

If your modem is synced at 7Mbps then the copper is pretty good, whether it goes to a cabinet or not. throughput is a different story, and its not related to the ADSL line in your case, but can be affected by heaps of other factors. If that was a NZ speedtest you compared it with, then its affected by your modem, your ISP, and their bandwidth on different parts of their network as well as Telecom's bandwith. Check the speed in early morning too and you can see how much its affected by traffic at peak times.

Time to find a new industry!

Behodar:

As well as the maps mentioned by Biddle you can check out the Cabinetisation Notices on the Chorus web site. http://www.chorus.co.nz/cabinet-notices

The Forecast gives you a general idea of when chanegs will occur and the Migration Schedule gives the next couple of months of activity. They update the latter weekly and it seems pretty accurate. They planned to do my cabinet last week by the 25th and it was completed on the evening of the 24th when I got home! I went from 1.5Mbps to 6.5Mbps on plain old ADSL so I was pretty happy! :-)

It also tells you whether they are putting ADSL 2+ gear into the cabinet at that time or just shortening the loop.

Cheers

If I put either address (home or work) into Telecom Wholesale's maps then I get "This address is scheduled to be connected to a roadside cabinet using faster broadband equipment (ADSL2+ technology) by Jun 2011". In both cases it highlights the cabinet area.

The cabinet near work went in last year. sbiddle says above that all cabinets have ADSL2+ which makes me wonder what the cabinet's doing since it's apparently not feeding 2+ yet. It's WHK/AP.

What does the cabinet look like, it may currently be simply a cross connect cabinet that carries no active gear, or could be an active cabinet with older DSL1 gear and probably voice gear also.

dont forget that a majority of the new whisper cabinets that carry the new ADSL2+/VDSL2 gear (whisper cabinets are the guts of the FTTN project) are normally placed where existing cross connect cabinets exist for obvious reasons, and as I said above in many places in the past cross connect cabinets have been fitted with ADSL1 and voice gear as seen fit and was common long before the FTTN project was started.

So that cabinet is most likely to be ripped out at the date indicated and connected by a fibre line (it may or may not currently be connected by fibre could be HDLC on twisted pair).

A picture may help clarify.

Downloading from microsoft.com at 7136 kilobits/s (892 kilobytes/s) as we speak :)

That's my guess; I'd wager that it has DSL1 equipment since the speeds are so good.

Argh! I meant to take one today while getting lunch and I forgot all about it.
