Hi all,

Recently my local cabinet has been upgraded to offer ADSL2+, so I quickly jumped at the chance to buy a new router and change plans with Xnet to their fusion service therefore giving me access to ADSL2+

I know the cabinet I am on is circa 600m from my house, the exchange is closer to 1.5km so i expected an improvement in my attentuation.....

But thats not what happened, infact my download attenuation went from 19db to 31db now I am connected to the cabinet.

Download / upload before

4600 / 756

Download / upload after ADSL2+

7000 / 800

SNR margin dropped to both 12/12 up and down from 12/15 before

Attenuation was

Up 7db / down 19db and has now gone to UP 7db / Down 31db...

I have tried isloation test on all jackpoints in house and this is best speed i can get.

Router is SMC 7904WBRA - N wireless

Can anyone help with suggestions i was hoping to get down speeds of circa 14-17Mbs....7mbs is terrible.

Did these figures change immediately when you moved to xnet?

Are you sure the cabinet is actually operational? There is a chance the current poor performance is a consequence of the cabinet not yet being cut over.

That doesnt make sense at all. You say attenuation went up and the speed also went up from 4Mbps to 7Mbps. I would be happy with a speed increase like that, but how could 7 megs possibly be terrible when its the fastest you can possibly get on ADSL1? It might get better once telecom finish testing everything, as long as your router is trying to synchronise with ADSL2+. If not then try setting it manually or wait for telecom to enable it.

Time to find a new industry!

Are you on adsl2+? or are you cabinetised to adsl1. I can't say that I would be happy with a speed increase like that because you could always get better no matter what. I had chaning snr margins all the time like you my one was high and I was on 13mb down, then I called telecom up and said to them that something is wrong they looked into it and got me 18mb down and 980kb up which is great!

Not quite true there.

My download speeds on ADSL(1) are 7.3-7.7mbps and as far as i'm aware while the MAX that is really achievable is around 8100 kbps in New Zealand the speeds are ABLE to go as fast as 12mbps though this is never seen. Theoretically it is possible, but due to noone being able to plug into an exchange with only 1 metre of copper cable.

That's what I have heard from a ISP NOC

What do you mean your cabinet was upgraded to ADSL2+?

Is it possible, you are not yet connected to the cabinet and they are still working on the connections? They could have put ADSL2 into your local exchange, but that does not mean you are on the cabinet.

In my case, the cabinet was physically installed, but it was nearly 3 months before they cut over to the new cabinet.

During that 3 months, my connection speeds were variable.

Hi, a couple of things of interest, your previous speeds were only 4.9Mb/s on 19dB attenuation, should have been full 7.6Mb/s DSL1 speeds, so maybe there are wiring issues in your house that a simple isolation test has failed to isolate out.

Assuming the cabinet does infact cover your address, its possible that you for some probably unexplained error been left connected to the originating exchange and suffering midspan injection issues. I have come across several situations of this recently, they were complete wiring error oversights on Chorus's behalf which they corrected quickly once brought to there attention.

Its also possible that the cabinet is still in the process of being cut over, sometimes during that period, which can be some weeks, the performance is negatively impacted as you have.

Firstly thanks to everyone who has replied.

My ISP now tells me (XNET) that the cable to the cabinet is infact longer than the connection to the exchange which is causing the worse attenuation.....this would mean the cable is running around the neighbourhood a few times before arriving at my home.....

BUT how would this explain a upstream attenuation of 7db and down of 31db...such a large difference?

Really starting to get annoyed and lookig now at getting new wiring in the home to try and improve....

Sounds like someones talking $hit, I would be asking for a tech to check the connection through.

What I do find interesting is that your original line length was well inside the threshold that would not have put you on a cabinet, not that it would happen, but there was not need, yet you still have poor sync rates, so maybe its something your end.
