Hi

I recently signed with a company called Blackvpn that gives you VPN access to servers in the US and UK. For some reason it just doesn't want to work when I am at home. I was wondering if anyone else on Orcon was having any issues with this?

At home I am with Orcon. I have used it at various other locations with other connections and it works fine. The strange thing about how it doesn't work at home. The connection is made and seems fine, but the latency is so bad that I can't even get a website to load.

I have tried opening all my ports on my router, I have tried opening specific ports on my router. I have tried connecting form 2 different machines on the network. I have tried turning on uPNP on my router, I have tried turning off uPNP on my router.

I have tried lowering my MTU from 1458 to 1400 as I was advised by Orcon Support when I contacted them about this.

My partner has a work VPN that she can't connect to in Melbourne. Though that never connects at all. Having said all that, when I use my local work VPN, which connects to Auckland, it works just fine. Could there be an issue connection to offshore VPN's or am I over simplifying things?

Any suggestions would be most welcome :)

What kind of VPS does your provider offer? There are several types, being the most popular ones IPSec and SSL. The former type is known to have problems with NAT connections (i.e. if you have a router at home or connecting from a hotstop).
I use a OpenVPN NAT (SSL) to connect to a server in US and works flawlessy

Thanks for your help. I am not sure what VPS they are using. I know that my iPad is meant to connect using PPTP and my Mac is connecting using this App called Tunnelblick.

Another point that might be important. With my computers it seems to connect but just doesn't work, though the connection seems fine.

With my iPad, it connects for about 10 seconds and then drops the connection with an error message saying that "You were disconnected by the communication device. Try reconnecting. If this problem continues, verify your settings.

I spoke to one of our IT gurus at work and he reckons that Orcon is doing something called shaping and that is why it's not working. Could that be it ?

I doubt shaping alone would be giving you such ppor performance. And also, VPN traffic is usually not shaped. I am leaning towards there being a problem with your router. You may want to swap out with a friend to see if that is causing the issue.

Hi Everyone

Thanks for you help, but I decided to go with another company and everything is working fine. So it must have been something that the company I was dealing with was doing.

Of course my fiance's VPN in Melbourne still won't work, but we suspect that has more to do with the "people" who set it up over there :)
