I currently use Orcon as ISP. There is a Telecom cabinet within 500 metres of my house and currently I get download speeds of about 12mps.  When the cabinet went in my Orcon speed when down from about 3mps to 0.9mps.  I kicked up a stink about it and eventually Orcon installed a bit of their equipment in the cabinet which gave me the improved speed I now have.  Orcon were reluctant to do this for financial considerations.  For various reasons I am now thinking of going over to Telecom.  Is it likely that the Telecom equipment in the cabinet might produce inferior results. Unfortunately I have no technical details of what is in the cabinet.

I very much doubt Orcon put any gear in the cabinet, I understand that they or voda have deployed a couple of trial cabinet DSLAMs and thats all, of course this could be one of them.

Normally Orcon simply put you back on a Telecom wholesale connection so you use Telecoms gear back to Orcons BRAS, this is what I imagine has happened. As such your connection should be the same or similar to what it is as its the same gear, so what your real question is how well provisioned is Telecom as an ISP compared to Orcon rather than considering how good or bad the gear in the cabinet is as its all the same.

Thanks Cyril.  Your comment about being put on to Telecom Wholesale rings a bell.  My reasons for looking to switch are largely financial.  I have had a lot of problems with Orcon accounting and Telecom is offering deals that look cheaper for me.  As well I see various posts that infer Orocon is doing fancy stuff like "shaping" although I do not have much grasp of the implications of that.  I have had numerous instances of overseas sites hanging although the causes of that can be many and varied so switching may or may not make any difference to that.  Hmmmm

I suspect that the cost of BB from Telecom will be more that from Orcon if feed from a cabinet.

The last time I checked (about 3 months ago)  Orcon only came in cheaper if your were lucky enough to be on their unbundled network otherwise Telecom with Total Home became the much cheaper option.

That said Prices most likely have changed since then :). I know telecom have brought (Or are bringing out) new Total Home Planes.

Depends how much data you use and how much (if any) toll calling you do with your landline.

The new plans that are coming out soon have more data for the same price but less calling addons inbuilt (like free national calls to a nominated number etc)

if you are 500 to a cabinet you may just switch to Telecom or ask Orcon move you to telecom wholesale.
this cabinet will affect the performance on the UCLL ISP did on exchanges, Orcon has a post about this on their website:http://www.orcon.net.nz/about/article/cabinetisation_what_does_it_mean_for_orcon_customers

Orcon Home Gold plan 10gb = $122.61
Telecom Total Home 10gb = $102.00
However the Telecom plan is for a 12month term and only Auckland Wellington Christchurch

Yes But IIRC, Its only an extra $5 or $10 to get the same total home plan outside those 3 centers
