Hi there,

So I signed up with xtra recently. They sent me a nice modem and installation cd.

Installation CD would not run all the way through (stalls when it should be setting up the modem and internet connection settings). Am able to connect to the internet using various applications on the installation cd to set my computer up. Trouble is once I am connected to internet, if I turn the computer off it loses all of the settings and I have to go through the whole process again to get the connection back.

Am running XP pro on an older pentium II processor, but there is plenty of memory etc. Being older it might have some corrupt registry files or something??

Any suggestions of what the problem might be and how it might be fixed greatly appreciated!

what modem is it?
how are you connected (USB? network cable?)

if it has an option to use ethernet (looks like an oversize phone jack on modem), use that instead of USB, set your network connection to DHCP (automatic) and your troubles may disappear forever.

sorry, missing information...

connected by ethernet cable to a D-link DSL 502T modem

Pretty sure the network connection is set to DHCP and automatic, but will go home and check...in fact, looking at the clock it is definitely time I went home instead of sitting on a work computer asking questions in forums...

OP - usual to lose DHCP settings like that... let us know if you get up and running.

great, my first post in a new forum gets hijacked!!

Ok, so...

once computer has been turned off, when I turn it back on the computer does not remember how to communicate with the router. The icon comes up that I am connected to broadband, but none of the software is able to find the connection. If I reset the flash card on the modem and reinstall the username and password onto the modem, then it works just fine....

???

I'll get back on topic before a moderator comes along...

It sounds like your PC is behaving, and your modem is not - i.e. its holding the connection details until it gets rebooted.
What model modem is it? After you enter the username and password for adsl in the modem, are you actually clicking 'save and reboot' ? (Sorry to ask...)

Hey Bungle.

Re: Ethernet cable(blue one). With those modems thats all you need plugged in... then you can manually put in your username and password.

Are you an exisiting Xtra Customer? Ie did you have an Xtra email address before you got broadband.

If so, ensure he routers plugged in then do the following:

1. Open your browser of choice
2. Clear the address bar and type in: 10.1.1.1
3. In the prompted window use admin for both username & password.
4. Once the control panel loads up, click on the link (left hand side) "Username & Password"
5. Enter your username & password in here
TIP: If the field for username has a .xadsl at the end of it, just input your username (e.g. bungle@xtra.co.z, username = bungle)

If theres nothing beside it, for the username, tack the .xadsl@xtra.co.nz on the end.. ie bungle.xadsl@xtra.co.nz

click save (twice i think) and your router will reset. Should establish a connection if everything was entered properly after a little over a minute.

Hope it helps (see back of manual for manual instructions... they were there on thr old manual at least)

My apology!!! And also my apology to SilentOne.

I just think that you should still uninstall the software component first. Before try again. Try SilentOne's method first, http://10.1.1.1 to go into the location bar.

In the modem, there is an option in "Status" bar to "Save and Reboot". When you configure the modem, can you make sure you have done "Save and Reboot" as everytime you power the modem down, when restart it will default itself.

well thanks for the input. I was doing most of the things you were suggesting...and it was still doing it.

got around to installing sp1 and 2 on the xp the other day as well.

couple of restarts later it seems to be working fine now....and I have not done anything different!!

buggered if I know what was going on!!
