Hi,

Let me introduce myself. My name is David Bourne, and I run an activist group against Telkom. Telkom is the South African version of your Telecoms. Except we seem to have got a larger shafting... but we are working on it. I run the website:

http://www.antitrust.co.za

But we have a couple of other sites that also fight the good fight:

http://www.hellkom.co.za
http://www.myadsl.co.za
http://www.screwthepublic.co.za

There seems to be a trend with these telecoms companies abusing their countries. If anyone would like to have any type of discussion or get in contact with us to share and swop information, please contact me at webmaster@antitrust.co.za .

It does appear we have the same problem, so prehaps it might not hurt to work together.

Welcome to Geekzone David, you may find that a lot of participants here on GZ (from both sides of the fence) are burnt out for now in regards to this sort of debate - I know I am!!

Best of luck in gaining good service in your country, however that may turn out to be delivered.

Its a lot bigger than a matter for debate in South Africa. Our economy is strangled by one corporation, and its not something you get "tired" about, just like you do no get tired about crime or poverty. For us, its about beeing charged the most expensive rates in the world, and trying to stop the cripling impact on the economy.

Regarding the trolling.. I dont think I was as I understand the word. Two of the sites are not mine, and are anti telkom based sites. The one is mine and its an activist site. I was hoping for information and useful contacts. Im not bothered by hits.

Nah, check it out. Have talked to other Seffricans who say the same - Telkom appears to be the Telco From Hell. They managed to get Skype banned in South Africa for instance. Reading this TeleGeography page, and it sounds all too familiar really...

That Kelly2626 joke is getting a bit worn out... :)

Welcome to the Geekzone David. There are a number of people here who believe that allowing Telecom NZ to charge like a wounded bull for its monopoly was the way forward, so expect to get flamed if you don't agree with that.

Thanks Juha. Its not a debate, unless on the one side is every south african citizen, and on the other are Telkom shareholders. Im not here to debate the pros and cons of privtization and liberlization. Im here to discuss how to stop the devistating impact of telecom companies that abuse their monopolistic power as in our case.

Problem with our company is its semi privatised. It is procted by law, and can so no to government. When the company was semi privataised, an American consortium bought a controling stake in it... an "americanized" it by training the company to put profit before people instead of the other way around. For some reason, this corp (the name of the corp is Tintana) also wrote our telecoms laws. What was our idiot (WELL PAID!!...*kof* telkom *kof*) minister of communications, thought it would be a good idea.

Did you know our telecoms companies legal dept is bigger than its technical dept? It was found guilty by our competition commision, and fined 10 % of its turn over. Telkom turned around and told the CC that they had no authority over telkom. This was a couple of years ago.... the lawyers are still fighting it ou.

A country like South Africa needs every chance it can get, and our prices really and in very real ways destroying out future.
