I hope that you can help me...
I am trying to install a HP LaserJet 1015 as a local printer on a PC running Windows 2000. The printer is connected by a USB cable. Sounds simple enough... but whenever the PC reboots, plug and play picks up the new printer but at the completion of the install I get the message:
'An error occurred during installation of the device. The printer name is invalid'
So printer appears in the printer list. The printer name is hp LaserJet 1015 which looks pretty valid to me.
Things I have tried:
I have gone through the registry (regedt32) and have removed all reference to '1015' and other HP printer keys.
I have done the same in regedit, although some keys couldn't be deleted until I gave myself rights using regedt32.
I am a domain administrator on my company's network, but I manually gave myself full rights to all registry keys and their children.
I have tried running this via LPT1, but got the same result.
I have physically removed the printer and have successfully used it on my own PC. So the printer is not at fault. At this point, I'm seriously considering the 'sledgehammer' approach - i.e nuke the HD and set it up again. The only thing stopping me from doing this is that the PC in question is used in our instrument shop and has a lot of specialised software on it. I doubt very much that they still have all the CDs to re-install this.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
John.
