Hi there,

I'm so sorry if this is in the wrong area, I couldn't work out where to post it.

I have an Acer Aspire laptop which some months ago crashed, and no matter what was done it wouldn't turn on any more. I tried every suggestion on every single website I oculd find but nothing worked. I'm not bothered by the computer at all as it is reasonably old, however the photos on the hard drive are irreplaceable.
I had a friend who works in IT take the hard drive out for me and try to connect it to his desktop and his laptop via an external hard drive USB case, neither computer regonised anything as being connected. He also put the hard drive into his laptop and it wouldn't boot up.

Is there anything further than can be done? I don't want to waste money on taking it to a shop for something that won't work, however would love to be able to recover at least some of the photos on the hard drive if possible. Otherwise I guess the laptop would be a writeoff and I should sell it? Try and make a bit of money out of my problems at least!

Cheers
Stacey

Was it recognised in the BIOS, but not the OS? If so, recovery may still be possible. If not, recovery may still be possible. It really depends why it died, and how valuable the data is. If it is detected in the BIOS but not OS, you may simply need to try a different OS - there's a number of bootable environments you could try. If it's not detected in the BIOS, the platters may be fine, but the motor or power not, and some places like Computer Forensics may still be able to recover it. Last I checked, they didn't charge if they couldn't do anything, but successful recovery was somewhere in the vicinity of $750+GST.
