Hey guys and girls,

Am looking at upgrading my computer from the specs below:

AMD3000+, 9800Pro, 512GBx2 Dual Chan. Ram

To Q6600 Quad Core, Asus P5k MOBO, 2x1GB 1066mhz ram, Legend NVidia Geforce 8600GTS 512MB GDDR3 PCI-E 16X.

Now the big thing I am confused with is say I run the above setup with 2 HDD and one DVD-Writer.

What size power supply will I need? Will heat be an issue? (Not overclocking)

If you are running an 8600, quad core cpu etc. You will want at least a 500W PSU.

You will be fine with a 450w PSU or above. I had my Q6600, 8800GTS and a couple of hard drives running off a 430w with no issues for a while.

The stock heat sink is fine if you aren't overclocking, but Q6600 can be overclocked to achieve very good results.

You should consider 8800GT for your setup, I know it's little more expensive than the 8600GTS right now, but it's the best card for that price range.

For the power supply have a look here, buy a good brand PSU such as Antec or Corsair.

Cheers guys,

Things sure have moved on since I last built my last computer.

I've been running CD Writer, DVD Writer, Radion 9800, 20GB HDD, 250GB HDD, AMDXP3000+ with stock power supply ok.

It was easy building that thing. But since then Raid0, firewire, ATA133 and now 150. 64 architecture. I just needed a good srcubbing up. Only reason decided to change is now I can't play most of the games released. "Bar" World at Conflict etc.

I am only going to be running 2 hard drives, 1 DVD burner and the above parts.

The 8800's are rather pricey.

Also if the warehouse is offering a 8600GTS 256 and for $60 more a 512. Would you go for the 512 even though the clock speed is slightly slower?

Q6600 - $393.35 incl

8600GTS 512 $321.41 incl

ASUS P5KC $212.32 incl

2x1GB Ram is dare for 1066 type. $300. Saw some for $170ish but out of stock.
