Hey guys,

I realise there is a plethora of threads from people asking for help with piecing together a new PC, and I’m sure the local Hardware Guru’s are sick of answering them all, But I thought I’d try my luck with my own thread, rather thank hijacking someone else’s…

Anyways, here the skinny of it:

I have about $3000 earmarked for a new PC, mainly for gaming. Don’t need monitor or anything else, just the Box with all the goodies inside.

So, this is what I have gleaned from other threads and various bits of research.

CPU: Intel C2D Q6600 (Overclock? 3.0ghz – ish)

VGA: 8800GT 512mb

Ram: 4gb of DDR2-800 (Will XP professional use 4gb, or will I need Vista Ultimate?)

Mobo: No effen idea, any recommendations? (It’s not worth it to go X38 is it? Stick with P35?)

PSU: Recommended size?

HDD: WD 750gb AAKS

DVD: Asus DRW-1814BLT

Case: Antec P182 (Just like the plain look, no bright lights all over it etc)

That’s the basic rundown, hopefully you guys can’t tinker with little bits to fine tune it a little :D

Also, a few related questions:

I’ve heard that having a 36gb Raptor with just the OS loaded onto it, and then the other hard drive for everything else, boosts performance? Any truth, or not really worth it?

From reading other threads, the Q6600 overclocks easily to 3.0ghz, what kinda cooling should I be looking at?

I read the Watercooling threads around here, and that could be an option (hate that damn fan noise when trying to sleep) but would OCing it to 3.0ghz generate enough heat to make Watercooling worthwhile?

I’ll be (attempting) to build this myself, and probally all be happening in January.

Well, that’s all I can think of at this stage… Hopefully someone has some ideas for me.

Thanks in advance!

Personally I don't bother overclocking these days, the GFX cards don't overclock much (fine tuned already) and the CPU speeds are fast enough as they are. Mobo choice is critical.

IMHO:
CPU: check
GFX: check
MOBO: Don't skimp, get one with o/b raid controller and PCIE-2 if you can, look for good heat managed boards
RAM: Don't skimp, get decent brand w/ heat spreaders and CL4 timings or faster
PSU: 500w, if going dual gfx cards (SLI) then 600w+, you get what you pay for with these, PS quality is key
HDD: Get two 512GB WD raid edition drives and configure them in Raid 0 - the raid edition drives have fast sustained speeds
DVD: whatever
CASE: whatever, just ensure decent ventilation

IMHO, i'd spend more for the better parts and wouldn't bother with overclocking.

As far as HDD's, after playing around with multiple setups i'm now running two WD 320GB raid edition drives in Raid0 and it's a bloody fast setup. I don't multi-partition them and I keep maintained by diskeeper pro with the ifast set up for speeding up apps.

This is my personal opinion of course, my current setup is:

CPU: AMD X2 5600+ (like these over the 6000+ as they are lower wattage)
MOBO: Gigabyte nforce 570 S4 mobo (excellent board but poor soutbridge heatsink)
GFX: 8800GTS
RAM: 2x 1GB Crucial ballistix DDR2-800 CL3
PSU: Enermax Liberty 535w
HDD: 2x WD3200YS 320GB raid edition drives in Raid0
Case: Gigabyte titan

You could build that system for around $1600, if you're mainly gaming then a dual-core cpu might be better bang for buck. You need xp64bit or Vista to see 4gigs.
Vista will also have DX10 support, I've read Xp will not.

Here's something you could look at:
1 x Apacer 2GB Dual Kit (2*1GB) DDR2-800 PC6400 CL5 Dual Package $86.80
1 x Western Digital Caviar 250GB SATA II 7200RPM 16MB Cache $95.00
1 x Gigabyte GA-P35C-DS3R P35 LGA775 FSB1333 DDR2+DDR3 ALC889A AUDIO $198.35
1 x Asustek DRW-1814BLT Lightscribe SATA DVD-RW Black 16X DVD ± R SA $50.00
1 x Raidmax O2 Pure Color Mid-Tower Case With 500W Power Supply (Bla $111.00
1 x Asus Nvidia 8800GT 512M HDCP PCI-E Graphic Card $398.10
1 x Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 2.66GHz 4M 1333MHz Processor Retail Box $250.40
                                                                                                                                                                                                    +GST

As stated you would have plenty of $$ left over to improve the ram, or up the harddrive , the E6750 and gigabyte board go well together, easy overclocking to 3ghz on stock cooler, many people doing 3.6ghz with aftermarket cooler. The board also supports both ddr2 and ddr3 ram, and you can stick a quad-core straight in if you ever want to upgrade (when the quads become dirt cheap :)

I would wait for the nVidia 9 series.
Windows x64 will be able to use all 4gb of ram.

the new nvidia 8800 gts512 and gt512 are essentially a new line of card from nvidia that they've just kept the 8000 series branding on, do some reading and you'll heard about 65nm this and g92 that.  But definately nvidia all they way baby!

asus and gigabyte and making some darn good gear at the moment, so I'd say pick one of them and get that brand motherboard and graphics card, dont cheap on the mobo, it'll come back to bite you in the backside.

I would forget about the Q6xxx and E6xxx series. Have a look at the new Intel Core 2 Duos. They are cheaper than their E6xxx equivlents.

We have been selling quite a few of the new Intels. Very impressive performance. The QX9650 is insane,

well said bradstewart, the conroes look sexy!!  The e8xxx duo cores look nice too but if you've got 3g's to throw at it you may as well go quad core.  I've seen the e8500 over clocked to about 4.8GHz, now thats a spicey meatball!
