Hiya all.

We have a DVR security system with a 250gb hard drive in it. The HD has stopped working and we want to upgrade to a 500gb. I have checked Dick Smiths online and TradeMe and there is so may to choose from and such a variation in brands and prices.

What brand do you recommend me buying, where from, and at what price? I just want a robust product at a fair price that will do the job. Don't mind buying of TradeMe just want a good brand. Sata, Seagate etc etc????

As far as I see you have IDE hard drive. If you can't connect SATA (which is only different connectors and write/read speed) your only option is IDE hard drives.

WesternDigital and Seagate is the most popular and stable HDD's... I would go for WD as they a bit quiter than Seagate.

So the words you have to look are IDE, WD and 16mb cache :)

Trademe doesn't seem that perfect. Starting bid $138 for a drive selling at Ascent for $144 with 36 months warranty instead of just 12.

One of the most important things affecting drive reliability isn't brand it's the handling it's had.

Stick with known stores for hard drives...saves hassles down the road if it fails etc.
And you can pickup 500gb drives now for a lot cheaper than that. Check on Pricespy.co.nz

Oh and by the way the drive is still covered under a limited warranty by westerndigital

so take it back to where you got it from and ask for a new drive under warranty

Thanks for all your help guys. After all that it turns out that our CCTV systems are now rented as last time we purchased outright. I think we renbted this time to keep up with technology. So in the end they were covered by our rental agreement but the fault ended up being with the power supply not HD.

Just one thing to be aware of, ideally any CCTV system should have a CCTV/DVR HDD fitted. Both Seagate and Wetern Digital do these drives and the pricing is slightly higher than their non DVR drives. They are typically not as fast but are built to withstand higher read/write cycles and heat that typically occur with DVR units that are locked away.
