Hi,

I want to upgrade the memory in a Compaq SR5140AN desktop. Currently it has 2 X 512MB PC-5300 modules installed. I want to buy 2 X 1 GB modules but what speed? Is there any advantage going to PC-6400? This website says it supports PC-5300 PC-6400 and PC-8500. Thanks in advance

Yes the PC6400 is faster but you probably won't notice any difference. If you mix sppeds it will only run at the lower speed. If I were you I would just buy the cheapest supported memory.

I would think the extra memory would be responsible for a noticably greater performance boost than simply faster memory, assuming you are running Vista. The hardware specs look fairly recent. I hear over and over again that Vista performs much better with not less than 2MBs installed. I'd go for both speed and quantity. Better to get lots of good fast RAM while it's cheap.

The graphics performance will always suck when processed by the SR5140AN's integrated graphics hardware, but then you probably do not want to run 3D games on the PC.

2GB = Here ($57.75)
4GB = Here ($110.65)

Up to you in terms of whether you wanna throw 60, or 100 bucks at it. 2GB would be the least you want generally, however if you go for the 4GB only 3.5GB will be detected if you use a 32bit OS.
