Has anyone else run into the issue of opening files from explorer taking so long, eg opening a 50kb excel file taking weel over a minute to open from explorer but if opened from excel it opens instantly?

Files are stored on a server. Win XP on laptop with office2003 all latest updates loaded. 2gb ram on laptop.
i have tried chaing the file type etc in explorer to not DDE and adding %1 but this causes a new instance of excel for each file opened meaning no links between worksheets etc..

Files open perfectly fine on other pc's on the same network.

Issue is also happening for files on local drive.

I have also reformatted laptop and done clean installs with just XP and also with system disks provided with laptop.

Laptop is a Toshiba Tecra A9.

Any help would be appreciated

have you installed any apps that use contextual menu's in Explorer, or any add-on's for explorer? These can really slow things down if they're not designed well.

As far as I know there are no add ons running for explorer or Excel. as for contextual menus i'm not sure what you are meaning. How would i find any apps like this?

like if you right click on a file within explorer, does it have any non-standard windows options: eg, Add to Archive often comes up when you have enabled contextual menus for winzip or winrar or the like. Things like that.

Hi,

Yes it has bluetooth running and when i right click it has an option to send to bluetooth.

I have just disablede bluetooth and unreg/reg excel server and now the files are opening great.

I'll need to see if Toshiba have a newer version of the bluetooth software and test with that.

That's good news. If there isn't a newer version of the Bluetooth app, try going into the bluetooth radio app settings to see if there is an option to integrate with explorer - turn it off if so. that way you should still be able to have bluetooth running but keep explorer speedy too.

It could have something to do with a virus scanner scanning folders as you open them.

Hi,

Have resolved the issue finally. It was definately the Toshiba Bluetooth Stack that was causing the issue. I have upgraded the software to the latest version i could find for XP and now all files are opening great.
