Hello again helpful people. I've come looking for help. My son hasn't changed anything on his computer but today when he's gone to play some of his games, steam, most were crashing and some were rebooting the computer. We tried EA, xbox and unreal engine all the same. Only a very few games will load and play, rimworld (steam) seems to be the only one that works. A the rest freeze within the first 5 minutes, if they load at all and some reboot the pc. Any ideas?

Thank you in advance.

Does it freeze / reboot if it's idle, or just in games? I wonder if it's a heat issue, caused by dust or the CPU coming lose from the heatsink. I use FanControl which puts the CPU temperature in the system tray.

To work it out I'd probably get a live Linux boot disk and run some kind of benchmarking software. Ideally in a GUI so you can have another utility show the CPU temperature. That rules out Windows as the problem. It might take a bit of effort but an Ubuntu live image is pretty easy to get going, then a bit of time on Google.

Forgot to mention it's windows 11. No issues except trying to play any game except rimworld. Steam loads and runs, just not other games. YouTube runs fine, all the Web browsers are good. It's just the games. We've checked the GPU driver and even re downloaded and re installed the most recent one and still having the same problem.

It still sounds like it could be heat, or else an application issue.

We tried running 3DMark and it said this

File: dx_command_queue.cpp Line: 62 Function: void __cdecl dm_gfx::dx12::dx_command_queue::wait(const class dm_gfx::dx12::dx_fence &,unsigned __int64) const Expression: m_native->Wait(fence.native(), value) Error: The GPU device instance has been suspended. Use GetDeviceRemovedReason to determine the appropriate action. (0x887a0005)

The reason I suggested testing under Linux is to make sure the windows install isn't a problem.

Dxgi device removed or device hung error is usually a sign of instability. Is this the same machine that had ram added to it?

Things to try in order:

-temperatures, if games are crashing after a few minutes please check you aren’t overheating (use hwinfo to check)
-try underclock your gpu by 50MHz. You want to set -50MHz in most utilities, or a simpler method is in nvidia control panel, enable debug mode to set the GPU to reference clocks.
-try to raise TDR delay time in windows. There should be instructions online to set this in regedit, it increases the timeout recovery delay, it doesn’t solve the root issue but it can stop it from crashing fully.

Ideally you want to revert any change mades recently if you can. Otherwise it’s a step by step diagnostic on what is causing the issue.

Yes it's the one we were going to add the ram to but they couldn't because they didn't have the room in the case. I did do the thing to the ram, in the bios, that was suggested (making it run a wee bit faster) a while ago. I've reset that back to stock while trying to figure out this issue.

I'll try and do more with it, anything y'all suggest, tomorrow as its doing my head in tonight. We don't have, or know anyone with, Linux sadly. I am thinking it's a Windows problem myself.

It's free, all you need is a USB memory stick. Link.

Has the computer updated to version 24H2?
That has caused problems with Steam programs.

If it has, uninstall the update to go back to 23H2 and that should fix it.  I had to do this so I could keep my HP Reverb G2 VR headset running.
The latest Windows 11 update has caused a lot of problems!!

I'm not sure. I did see this but it's only happened today and it's all games except rimworld, a steam game, even epic and unreal engine. I'll look tomorrow though. How do I check please?

Windows settings > System > Scroll to bottom and click "About" > and it will be under Windows Specifications next to version

Run a memtest program as well just to confirm the RAM is fine.

Check out ......System/Windows Update and check the version history.
I'm willing to bet that 24H2 is your problem. Google "Windows 24H2 problems with Steam" for further information.

It installed on my computer nearly a month ago, so it may have been on yours for a while. After a period of time you can't uninstall updates, but anyway, here's a UTube link on how to do it.
https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-d&q=how+to+remove+update+24H2.

I have installed a program which prevents any updates other than Security issues after version 23H2. Microsoft doesn't like it because it makes registry changes.
https://www.grc.com/incontrol.htm.
Microsoft has withdrawn the update for the time being due to the many issues.  24H2 is the forerunner to Windows 12.  Presumably they will release a bug-free update, but for me, the fact they have removed support for my hardware means I've had my last update on this PC.

Hope this all helps..!

Well I had hoped it was the 24H2 but nope he's still on 23H2. The ram is original with the computer and everything else. It wasn't changed but how do I run a test please.
