There is like a 2% performance difference between DDR2 and DDR3 on the LGA775 platform, I would stick with DDR2 because it gives you a much wider range of boards to choose from at a lower price.

4GB (2x 2GB) of DDR2 is also ~$40 cheaper than DDR3.

There isn't really a huge selection of micro atx boards with ddr3 capability, 2 or 3 at most is all i could find.
As stated previously, for lga775 ddr2 is all good and there are plenty of good boards eg: http://www.computerlounge.co.nz/components/componentview.asp?partid=9868

Are there any other specific details you need? sli? number of pci, ports, etc etc?

Laptop: Toshiba satellite, T5300, Go 7300
