Yesterday I got GTA IV from a friend of mine and I was just installing it an hour ago. When I started playing I lagged non stop and it took me 10 minutes just to be able to press escape and quit the game. I've never had any problems playing any 'Big' games (Crysis 2, Shogun 2 and so on) and this is the first time it lags, if you can call it lagging cause this is just watching one frame per minute.

I tried again after I quit the game after shutting all non essential programs in the background but it still lagged. I'm running a computer wider scan with AVG just in case I've got a bugger on my computer but I run it regularly so it probably won't find anything. I just bought my computer last autumn, and cost a lot:

Motherboard:ASRock P55 Deluxe Intel LGA1156
Processor: Core i7 860 Lynfield
Ram: 4GB Value PC3-10660
Graphics card: GeForce GTX 470

Depending how much it cost and my limited knowledge on computers my fair assumption is that it shouldn't lag.

This is a complete shot in the dark but have you got plenty of free space on your hard drive?

From what I have read, GTA IV is notorious as a poor console -> pc port, with many players experiencing issues with the game on PCs that should (in theory) easily be able to run it.

I dont have a solution for you sorry but I would recommend googling GTA IV on PC, I believe there are a couple of tricks out there that can be used to improve it's performance, but again I haven't had any direct experience personally.

Make sure the game is patched to the latest version, there were a whole load of fixes post release.

Check your video card drivers and intel motherboard chipset drivers are up to date.

Also in the game settings there is a option to detect the correct graphics settings, run this as it will stop you enabling higher settings than the amount of video memory can support.

If you have two monitors or can temporarily hook up second monitor it's worth running the Windows Resource Monitor on your second screen while running the game. This will give you an idea of whether there is any issue with cpu, memory or disk perf.

start > run > perfmon /res

If you can't find anything obvious, you have to remember this game is port from the console version and not very well optimized, you may need to turn the graphics settings down a bit to get smooth frame rates.

Ive seen it running reasonably well on a modest machine and that was when it was released, so the machine I saw it on must be on the rubbish heap by now compared to your box :)

How did you get on?

Agree with posters above that it's a sh*tty port but I have it running OK on a E7200 (dual-core, 2.4 GHz) with 2GB RAM and a Geforce 8800GT ( I think) so well below yours specs. I recall there being quite a bit of discussion during all the patch releases about tweaking the settings for water and shadow detail in the graphics option so that may be something else to try. Any maybe ramp down your resolution (not ideal of course, but it may improve gameplay).

that is so strange your pc should be able to play them fine computer im on is only a intel core 2 duo and it runs fine
