Hello im new here my names Jarrod This is my problem

Ok my pc is less than 1 year old (10 months i think) And when I play games it A) turns off B) blue screen of death (differnet message) and C) the screen gets all screwed up and radom sound comes out of my speakers.

I am only 14 years old so dont have much money to replace it and dont know to much about pcs
I think it is A) the PSU or B) the cpu over heating

My rig (i built it)

Intel dg45id (775)
Intel quad core 2.66ghz (Q9400)
4gb ram (ddr2 800mhz)
1tb HDD
dvdd
Ati 5770
and a Vantec 520 watt ion 2 psu

Plz help as I cant take it into the shops as it sometimes works :(
It works when all i do is internet or videos but crashes after 7 or so hours (so year)
But if I game (even light gaming Minecraft or god father 2) it crashes 15 min in. But if I play cod 4 i can play lan for a few hours (1:45 last time) and then it crashes.

PLZ HELP I dont know what to do :'(

Could be anything but its always worth starting with memory.
Assuming you have 2 x 2gb pieces then try removing one and give it a try.
If it still crashes swap to the other mem stick.

If it still crashes then its not memory and you start looking at something else.

Also - does the processor have thermal paste on it?
If not is it overheating when you run it hard - maybe check the general cooling of your PC.

oh yea

I forgot to say

I have tested the ram (both sticks by removing them and with mem test all good
I think it may be A the PSU or the CPU yes it does have thermal paste on it but i could put more on. Also if it is the CPU A) how can i see how hot is it B) how hot is to hot for THIS cpu

CPUFAN will tell you how hot your CPU is running.

Another thing to consider is checking that you have the latest video drivers installed.

Load up some temperature monitoring software like Everest and check all the temps under load. If the temps are fine I'd go with either an updated graphics driver or you've got a dieing PSU. Is your cpu seated correctly? Is the fan on your GPU ok?

Allow PC to run at idle from cold. If its ok in no or low use but plays up when gaming its overheating. Check CPU and videocard fans and heatsinks. Remove them and use a hoover or compressed air to clear. Tidy cables to allow better air movement. Check PSU for dust too.

With standard cooling the CPU, video and memory should not overheat, so check dust etc, hopefully no damage

Your CPU shouldn't be above 70C. Your GPU shouldn't get above 80-90C.
Grab a copy of coretemp or CPUID hardware monitor or GPU-z and check how hot your CPU/GPU get while idle and while playing games.

Check that your CPU/GPU heatsinks aren't full of dust and that the fans spin freely.

Agree with the comments and range for temperature monitoring.

And, are you are using any kind of manually set memory or cpu voltage multipliers etc you set yourself that could be creating instability. Reset the bios to default values and let it take care of that automatically until you have it figured out.

More CPU paste is never better, exactly the right amount is best. Look up a guide for your specific CPU.

Dont forget to check the GPU heatsink on the video card because its smaller but still important and may have a smaller fan, perhaps more sensitive to dust etc. If the video card is close to other cards, then you could move the card next to it or add a case fan to get air moving around more. I found the extractor fan works really well, although too late by the time I found that my GPU fan had seized and pretty much fried the video card.

Time to find a new industry!

ok im back. Yea I dont think it is my GPU fan as it is A) MASSIVE and B) i cleaned it out aswell as the cpu (I think the paste thing might of happened there but its worked crashed before i did that) I asked my father what he thought it mught be and he thinks it maybe the HDD so I ran the C drive thingy (i had to restart my pc) and i left it going all night AND it crashed so am doing it again and it crashed. Dad thinks I HAVE to let it finish or can i skip it??? When it turns on tho I here a fan spinning real loud (louder than norm) I looked in side the case and there is abit of dust in the PSU so that is my next job. Also im avg what about you guys???

Look up the brand and model number of your motherboard and get the manual.

Alternatively, is the bios type an Award, AMI, or Phoenix bios?

Usually says during boot.

ITS WORKING!!! Thx you guys so so sooo much. It turns out one of the ram thingys was broken (dont know how NO1 touches them) so i now only have 2gb of ram BUT its better than crashing every 15 min. Thx guys big help. now I know what to do if other stuff starts happening. Oh and i am going to build a new rig and you this for HTPC in the coming year :)
