Ok, I am a novice when it comes to computer downloads and smartphones. I hope someone can help me. I purchased a blackjack so that I could use the calendar function. I want to have a calendar on my computer that I can access and set appointments AND that my secretary can set appointments for me from her computer at another station. Our office does NOT use Microsoft Exchange. We just have a network with a server. I had a lotus notes program that had a calendar that would allow me to do this. I am having trouble loading it on my Blackjack with the ActiveSync function. Can someone tell me how to do this or let me know of a calendar program that will work. I really want this calendar to load on my phone so that I can view my calendar when out of the office.

(It is my understanding that I can't use outlook for this because we are not using Exchange. Please give me your thoughts.

You can use Outlook (which should come as part of the ActiveSync software bundle) on your Windows PC. What will happen is that you will need to export/sync your Lotus Notes to Outlook, then use ActiveSync to sync your BlackJack to Outlook.

Outlook doesn't have to have Exchange to work, it can function as Outlook-ActiveSync PIM. But most company/people that have Exchange running will utilise the Exchange-ActiveSync function.

And IF I'm dare to say, you may be able to find a 3rd party application that do Lotus Notes to ActiveSync conduit, or at least Lotus Notes-Outlook synchronisation.

Regardless, as long as you can get the synchronisation to Outlook, then your BlackJack can synchronise with Outlook withouth problem.

In all honesty, I would shell out a small monthly fee for a hosted exchange mailbox. Windows Mobile devices really shine when it comes to Activesync with a server.

With a hosted solution, you would pay a small monthly fee for a mailbox on someone elses exchange server (so you dont have to buy, install, maintain, secure, patch your own system).

Your desktop Outlook would also connect to the same account, and people in the office could load appointments in, and you would have them within minutes on your phone whereever you are.

If you choose not to use Outlook (with the possibility of hosted Exchange), then anything else you choose to use will probably not be quite as seamless (though there are some good options around apparently)

By the way, are you running Lotus Notes standalone, or with Lotus Notes server (Lotus Domino?)

I found a few links on how to make Outlook-Lotus Notes work together, and a couple of solution to get Lotus Notes sync with ActiveSync.

Chiefie: Thanks for the quick reply. I have an additional question. It is my understanding that since my office doesn't have Exchange, my outlook calendar function can't be accessed by multiple computers. Is this not true? I know I can do it with Lotus Notes by just having it on the server, but our "computer guy" said multiple computers can't access the same outlook account without exchange.

You can share your outlook calendar out to others to view.

Or you can have an outlook running the whole time and share this out so anyone can connect to it, but this mean that you'll need that pc/outlook running the whole time. Things to be aware of, there is not Outlook account when not using Exchange, there's Outlook profile on each computer, which can be unlimited, but only one profile can be active at a time. (I think your computer guy needs to get himself more familiar with other products first, or do research before guessing)

In longer run, it'd be more ideal to have Exchange server. Depending on the size of your company, Windows Server solutions aren't that pricey if using SBS 2003, which has CALs up to 75 licenses.

AND there are some solution that can be real affordable for real small company that doesn't want to invest in Exchange server, and using a shared Outlook data file... bear in mind, this is more of a very-small-scale solution and not meant for big PIM sharing. Do a search for keywords like "shared outlook".
