Hey there

I'm considering buying an HTC TyTN II mobile phone. It has a GPS receiver built in and apparently comes with TomTom Navigator 6. However, I've been told that it doesn't ship with maps of New Zealand built in.

I've tried to find the NZ maps for this software and haven't managed to yet. Can anyone else tell me if they're available - and if so, where (and if they cost)?

TomTom promised NZ Maps but they are not available yet. You can always use Google Maps but you will use your data connection as the data is downloaded in real time.

Thanks very much, Mauricio. I got Google Maps going with it, but rapidly discovered how much it would cost to use!

I've since managed to get it going pretty well with Garmin Que and the free NZ maps - for anyone else who wants to try this (it's not the easiest thing in the world to set up!) here are the links I used, and feel free to let me know if you want more info.

http://www.malsingmaps.com/wiki/index.php/PocketPC_Setup_Guide_to_use_Malsing_maps - to get the Windows Mobile software going (you need the Garmin one as well as GPSProxy - the NMEA baud rate needs to be 9600, not 4800 as in the instructions)

Then you can copy the map files onto a storage card and Garmin should (in theory!) recognise them and find your location with the GPS.

The Garmin software isn't particularly attractive, and it seems a bit buggy (I can't find addresses without it crashing) so I'll keep looking for alternatives, but this works pretty well for now.

I've got the same phone - and had the same thoughts. I've got a 1GB data plan with vodafone and so use google maps a bit. I did try GPS tuner for a wee while, and while it was nice with all the extra information that was provided - it didn't give the ability to give directions, so that wasn't so good.

I miss two things with google maps - one is voice prompting and the other is a screen to display GPS information - so you know when you actually have a good GPS signal.

OT: I ended up forking out for a new navman, rather than trying to muck about with the GPS software ... especially given the amount of playing about just to get it working...
