Hi There,

I got myself a blackberry curve from Vodaphone while on a pre-pay plan and I am told that vodaphone cannot set me up on a data plan using the same number as I have been using on pre-pay SIM card. Even if I go for BIS, I still will have to change my number, which I find is a pain, but I have been given hope that they will have this facility available soon.

Until this becomes available, I wanted to use internet, google maps on the device, but I am not able to do it and several visits to Vodaphone stores and phones to their customer support centers does not provide me any help on how to set it up. I have been able to install mini-opera browser, but that too have limited access and google maps has not been downloaded.

Has this setup been done by anyone using pre-pay sim? All help / advice will be useful.

Hi Nisch and welcome to Geekzone

While on prepay none of the internet/Email services will work! (just don't even try) save your headaches!

Your MSISDN/IMSI have to be provisioned on the RIM relay and they have to be on account! (at this time)

Also if you use your prepay SIM in the balckberry please turn off the data services under the network option or your credit will slowly go down.

I am able to access internet using mini-opera browser after making changes to APN settings. But when I try to download google maps, it forces me to use Blackberry browser and this needs the services to be setup correctly.

I am using BB for personal use, I have access to internet at home and at work and looking for a cost effective solution that will allow me to use internet (Google maps in particular) and if possible emails. Please suggest a cost effective option.

From memory a BIS (personal) instead of a BES (enterprise) is $35.00 per month comes with 3MB of data, and you can buy another 3MB for a further $10.00.

It won't be long before you can take your pre pay number to on account (or it may already be happening)

But yes it is only available on On account, and it is best to deal with it that way anyway, instead of prepay. Prepaid Blackberry = FAIL

Edit: this has now changed from a few months ago when I was on it last

If you own a Blackberry you want the best use of it get the BIS plan with any voice plan your call

You are only able to use Blackberry services if you are on On Account (not on a prepay connection). You also need to have the BIS product ($35+GST) to use blackberry services.

i.e. You would need to be on a You Choose plan, with Blackberry Internet (BIS) added.

The Blackberry Internet product (BIS) is what enables you to use the Blackberry browser and Push email, a regular dataplan will not allow you to do this as johnr said before your phone details must be activated in the RIM relay server - this is done when you add BIS to your account.

Is there any relief from Telecom service, as even telecom now offers Blackberry service. Do they have better rates and service? Any comments anyone?

opps, telecom offers CDMA blackberry while vodafone is on GSM. I am not sure if one can switch to telecom using vodafone devices.

At the moment you can not take a Vodafone (GSM) device to Telecom (CDMA)

Your best option if you don't want to change your phone number is to wait until you can move your prepay number to on account with Vodafone (very soon) or until Telecom has their GSM network running (later this year?) at which stage you may be able to take your blackberry to Telecom.
