I purchased a N97 in china and used the telecom XT sim card in china to test the phone and it worked fine. I got back to New Zealand turned it on at the airport and it picked up the telecom network.
Texted with it and made a phonecall halfway though the call the XT reception dropped out. Now I can't seem to get the Telecom connection anymore. Picks up Vodafone. How do I find the version of the phone. Does anyone Know what settings need to be altered.

There are two variants of the N97. One does does 900+2100 WCDMA and the other does 850+2100 WCMA.

I'd guess you have the 900+2100 version (which is the most common) which means the handset is no good for XT as it does not support the 850MHz frequency that is used. Telecom have some 2100Mhz sites in the major cities which is why it worked at the airport.

There is nothing you can do to change this - you either need to use the phone on Vodafone or sell it and buy a new handset if you want one that works on XT.

XT is %100 850mhz WCDMA with some 2100mhz WCDMA

Under the battery of the phone you will find a model number. If this model number is N97-1 then you're best to use the handset on Vodafone as it supports 900/2100 UMTS. XT uses 850 UMTS with 2100 UMTS coverage in very few places (usually inner city and the Auckland Airport, hence why you got coverage there)
