Hi

We have developed a custom mobile application in VB.NET that runs on Windows Mobile and hooks into a web service. We run both Telecom Harriers and Vodafone iMate JAM's. Just recently we upgraded our ISA server to 2004 and we started experiencing web exceptions ONLY on the Vodafone devices. We confirmed that this was the problem by reinstating the old ISA server and all worked OK again.

After changing to ISA 2004, our applications on the PDA's would start ok, and the very first http request/response went through fine, but the next one generated a web exception on the PDA and no requests made it to our ISA server (confirmed by watching logs). The PDA application would only run fine again once it was closed down and restarted.

This seems really bizarre. I don't even know where to begin.

Can anyone shed any light on this?

The default type of internet access provided by Vodafone differs from Telecom (or a standard ISP) is two ways.

1. Private IP addresses are allocated to mobile devices and NAPT is applied to traffic when being passed out to the internet.

2. A Proxy optimiser answers all Port80 requests and attempts to compress this traffic.

Your issue is more likely related to the second point. To bypass this you need to change the APN setting in the networking settings. You will need to specify the APN name as being:

direct.vodafone.net.nz
