Hi, this might sounds bit silly, but I just wanna confirm that so I don't need to waste 40/month on my phone bill.

When I just got my BB I have signed up BIS with Telecom to be able to get two of my personal email accounts on my BB. (Gmail and Me.com).

Then my company has issued a BES license for my BB, so I can also get my corporate emails.

Currently, it worked just fine. (Both my personals and work emails are pushed to my BB).

Today, I found an article says BES=BES+BIS and BIS=BIS only, so is that mean I don't need BIS on my BB and I can still get my personal emails pushed to my BB?

If that is the case, i think I can just cancel the BIS so I can save $40 a month and let work pay for the BES?...

Can someone please kindly help on my question?

Just a couple of things to note:

1. Is the article you mention from Telecom? If so then fine. If not, then you need to check with Telecom that their BES = BES + BIS. They have the option as to how they provision it.

2. Your IT manager does have the ability to restrict personal email being used by BES users. It is unlikely that they would do this but might pay to check.

Otherwise you should be good to go.

If you cancel your BIS plan then you won't have access to the Blackberry APN, and won't be able to use your BES email or any web browsing via the BB browser.

But looks like his work has gotten him provisioned with BES, so he may not need the BIS. That's his question in the first place.

What ever SIM he / she is using will need to have access to the BB APN, so in turn will need a BIS plan.

As far as I understand the only difference from BIS/BES is that the proxy servers needed to pass mail, BIS is hosted by the Carrier, BES is hosted by the company. BIS and BES users have 99% of the exact same functionality. BIS is included in BES plans? (that's what I thought anyways)

AFAIK you need access to the BB APN for BES, so you will need a Telecom Blackberry plan to get access to that APN.

BIS, BES and BES+BIS are three different services, and are provisioned with different provisioning commands from the mobile operator to the RIM relay switch.

BIS will NOT allow connection to Corporate Email servers, only to POP/IMAP.

BES by itself will connect to Exchange, Lotus Domino & Novell Groupwise and NOT POP/IMAP. Very few carriers bother with this one.

BES+BIS will allow connection to all.

They all provide the BlackBerry APN on the mobile operator end so as to reach the RIM relay, but the RIM relay itself then applies the rules as outlined above.

From memory, the Telecom blackberry data plans are currently allow for BIS + BES access.

If you deprovision the blackberry plans, you'll lose access to the BB APN and BB relay, and will lose the ability to use BES account (as the device will no longer be able to connect).

The BES device license is a CAL for the BES server, it doesn't cover your data costs or usage.

Ok, then if this is the case Telecom must set everyone up as BIS + BES. RIM actually charge a higher amount per user per month to the Telco for this, but presumably Telecom have decided it makes things simpler.

This whole provisioning overhead, dedicated links via relay servers, and monthly charge per active user to the Telco is something that only BlackBerry has and is I think a reason they will struggle to scale against the other vendors.

coke master is right,
you have to have the blackberry data plan on your account to be able to use either BIS or BES

in essence the BES license that your work are paying for allows your blackberry access to their servers but the blackberry data plan on your account is paying for that data to be transfered over the cell network

well thats how i understand it with telecom

yes, there are two pieces for a Corporate user:

1. The monthly mobile BlackBerry plan that must give you BES at least (just BIS is not enough)

2. The one-off purchase of a Client Access License (CAL) that is loaded on your BES server. There needs to be enough CAL's loaded on the BES server in order to support the number of simultaneous active users that your company has. These come in packs of 1, 5, 20, 50, 100's or even higher. The amount per user reduces the larger the pack.
