Hi

I have had a look through some similar discussions, but wonder if *anyone* in NZ has had success connecting a Palm Tungsten C to either Telecom's CDMA network via a Nokia 6385 or via Vodafone's GPRS on a Nokia 6310.

The base fact is this, I have a Tungsten C that I need to get going via mobile services. Wifi works a treat at work, but I need access while I'm away from the office.

Here is what I have tried and the problems encountered.

Telecom:
I first discovered, after reading a similar discussion in this area, that I needed the firmware updated on the Nokia 6485. I have had that done. Now when I try to connect to Mobile Jetstream (either via IR or via cable) on #777 with the right +crm=1 etc sequence, it connects OK, but is dam slow. The Palm reports a connect speed of 300. When I go to that jetstream speed test page, it says I've got a 10.1k link. My old clapped out modem at home is better than that! Can't seem to do anything to change that speed.

Anyone come across the same problem and solve it?

Vodaphone:
I simply cannot get the Palm to even dial *99# to connect to GPRS on the Nokia 6310 (either via IR or cable). It just doesn't like the sequence. I can use the non GPRS service to connect (sorry can't remember what they call it) but it's only rated at 14.4k. Still that's better than 10k from above!

Again, has anyone has success with this combination?

Just to note, both of these phones work via IR when the PC is connecting rather than the Palm, and at reasonable speeds, so it's clearly a Palm/Nokia interaction.

If anyone is able to assist here I would REALLY appreciate it. I'm really getting sick of being fobbed off between all the different suppliers saying "it's not really our problem". I just want to get something working.

Would appreciate any details on how to make one or other of these work. Even if it's a different model phone that I need.

Can you make sure that on your Palm you're using the generic GSM driver, instead of the specific for your phone, when trying to connect to GPRS?

Another this is, instead of *99# try using *99***x#, where x is the access point configuration. Sometimes the default is for WAP, which is not what you need. With this format you can specify which one to use.

Also, you might want to add a sequence like +CGDCONT=1,,"internet" when trying to connect to the Vodafone GPRS network.

What do you mean by "Generic GSM driver" on the Palm? As I understand it, you don't "install" drivers on the Palm to talk to the phones. At least, I have never found such a thing. I setup a new connection and told it to talk either via IR or cable. That's about it. If there are such driver, where does one get them from?

Second, I have tried the *99***x# sequence to no avail. It still doesn't even dial. According to Vodafone NZ's setup instructions, you don't need that. When I setup a connection from the PC it works without any special extras. The Palm does not however.

Any further suggestions most welcome.

When you define a connection you'll use the phone and for some models Palm supplies drivers (for Palm OS 4 and up). Have a look here for some instructions (although Bluetooth related you'll see some information that can be useful).

Ok, I've had a look through that FAQ on how to setup a Tungsten with Bluetooth and Nokia phone. Apart from the fact that the Tungsten C doesn't do Bluetooth (wifi instead), I have followed EXACTLY the same setup instruction (except there is no Generic GSM). I put in the same init string and all. The Palm still does not even get the Nokia to dial. You don't even see the "GPRS connection" start on the phone. Palm just sits and continually retries.

Has anyone on specifically on a Tungsten C got this going to any sort of Nokia phone? Sounds like Bluetooth is easier, but I don't have that option.

Hi, this may be too late but I have managed to get my Tungsten T and Nokia 6385 connected via the IR port. This is after the Telecom site states that the Nokia 6385 does not support Palm devices (http://www.telecom.co.nz/content/0,3900,202143-202780,00.html).

I'm new at this so to be honest I was shocked when it worked (as I was not too sure what I had done). Basically though there were a few posts on "Connecting Palm to CDMA" from this site that got me sorted.

Do the following (appologies if I'm telling you to suck eggs):
1) On the Palm, in Preferences --> Connections
2) Create a connection with the following characteristics
- Connection to: Phone
- Via: infrared
- Model: Standard GSM (the only other options I had was Ericson and Sony)
- Under details, remove any Init String details (i.e. this should be blank - have no idea why)

3) No got to Preferences --> Network
4) Create a new network connection with the following charateristics
- Service: Dial up Connection
- Username: mobile@jamamobile
- Password: telecom
- Connection: {the new connection you just made above}
- Phone: #777

Now just turn the IR on the phone on and hit connect.

This worked fine for me and the speed seemed fine.
