As I read the paper http://www.nzherald.co.nz/technology/news/article.cfm?c_id=5&objectid=10804679 i see EA looks to be moving into more mobile content and away from package content.  With the various rumors about a new gen of consoles coming on the market (PS4 in 2013 so they say) and the fact that the PC Desktop is supposedly dying out, where is gaming going?

Is it going to be a place where DLC rules, with the ability to play all games on what ever gaming console you have?

If PS4 fails will SONY just cut their losses and pull out of the gaming market (like they may do with their TV production arm)?

With the tablet becoming the computer of choice, will people just go to the Desktop PC setup were you yourself can up grade at any time and play online for free to be their gaming console? (I know hardcore gamers already do have gaming computer, it is more for the casual gamer) And will any decrease in demand for console units lead game developers to concentrate there efforts on PC games, so they aren't throwing money down the next gen game hole of a console system that isn't profitable?

And will there be a time where all of the above is just old hat and an all encompassing system be built into what will be our TVs that will handle everything from gaming, web browsing, downloading of content and telly watching? Much like how the smart phone has become our clock, camera, note pad, map, compass etc, and telephone.

Or has this all been discussed before in a thread I haven't seen yet? And will people still just go out and buy whatever is new just cause they want to?

I just find it interesting Sony are going back to the standard computing parts console model now. Should make games easier to port and make universal which could be good.

Think the biggest change is the one the xbox has started which is the move to have the console as a family entertainment unit with movies streamed, internet services easily accessible and even some gaming if you feel the need. In an age where most people probably game in their pockets or on facebook, It makes little sense to have a dedicated gaming unit any more, it needs to be multi use and provide casual and core games as well as being a hub for other activity.
Sony need to play catch up in this area now and put out something cheaper and multi use.

All I know is from the most recent set of XBOX rumors microsoft might be trying to 'Nintendo' and make a lesser powered machine. The only way I can see that working is if the 360 is 720p and this new one is 1080p gaming and the 360 just gets dirt cheap. Doubt it though.
