Yes, as long as they are in a very very standard format. The PS3 is quite picky about non conforming video files.

To make it easier, put your videos in a folder called VIDEO.

These are the file formats you can play. I've only ever not been able to play .mkv everything else that I have tried has worked fine.

most of the files i have are VLC media files.. and are described as

VLC media file (.flv)

So would this work???

No it wont play those. You can use something like PS3 media server to stream them from your computer though.

This.... makes it easier.

But requires you to have a PC and the PS3 on the same network. (not everyone has their PS3 online)

You run the PS3MediaServer on your PC, tell the PS3 to search for media servers and when it finds it, you can play almost anything on your PC via your PS3.

If your PS3 is not online then you will need to convert those video formats to one listed in the link I gave before. I think you can actually download different formats from youtube now, if that's where you are getting your .flv files from.

MP4 should be fine, for MKVs try changing the extension from MKV to Avi and most times it'll work

I have moved across the ditch. Now residing in Melbourne as a VOIP/Video Technical Trainer/Engineer.

Yep, MP4 will work fine. If the FLV has H.264 video you can easily extract the streams and remux to MP4 but since you can usually just grab the MP4, I'd do that. Check here the different formats.

I've never found renaming MKV to AVI to work, and I can't really believe it would. Have you actually tried it with any success? You can usually (losslessly) remux MKV to M2TS (I use tsmuxer, it takes just a few minutes on my slow machine).

I've always found the PS3 to be a really poor media player, not a very good interface, slow navigation and picky about the containers and codecs.

Makes a nice Blu-ray player though oh and it plays games good :-)

Then that is irrelevant with regards to playing them off a USB as the OP requested. Streaming is a different story.
