Hi There!

I know you can't resell games you buy on steam unless you setup an account for each game, which I can't be bothered with, but other than games that register on steam can games like Crysis 2 (Which I just finished and thought was actually really excellent), be sold?

Yes, unless they use some other form of online account DRM - Crysis 2 being EA, didn't it ask you to set up an Origin account when you installed it?

Crysis 2 can't be resold. For each of the games you want to resell you should go to the distributors website and check the terms.

It's a bit of a travesty really since now I have finished the game I can't give it to someone else to play and the box and container go into landfill.

Well it does add some benefits to the console games.

I sympathise. I've got games that I bought but which I cannot install on a new PC without downloading and registering with EA's Origin. Origin wasn't around when I bought the games but now the online activation won't work without it. I argued with them that I wanted my games with the same terms and conditions that I originally agreed to, and that I didn't want Origin on my computer. EA essentially said, "tough!"

So, I installed it on a VM with the horrible Origin bloat. One day, when playing, I got locked out. EA said they don't allow their games to be run on VM's. I fudged a way around that then next time they locked me out I went and downloaded the game. The one I paid for but was blocked from using because their crappy systems baulked at authenticating a VM.

Then the games studios scream about piracy.

We only buy licenses to play now and they can change the terms anytime they like.

Remember though that the EULA cannot override the law. In Europe, for example, the clause prohibiting resale cannot be enforced - in fact the one company that went to court to try (Autodesk) was smacked down so hard it took them weeks to scramble out of the hole they dug into.

There are two sides to the whole digital licensing thing, one side is that you won't be able to sell the game ever, but if you are clever about it, you can get a sale where you will pick up the game for a fraction of the retail price... I have been using Reddit Game Deals a lot to find what steam compatible games are discounted, meaning I have got piles of 2 year old AAA games for 5$ or less each...
