So I started lusting after some of the new Samsung M.2 Storage solutions, which led me to needing a new motherboard, which led me to new processors, and DDR4 Memory.

I can't see much change out of $1500 less what I'd expect to sell my old gear for.

I already have 3 x 500GB Evo 850's in a RAID 0

Is it fair to say the real world speed differences for gaming and day to day normal stuff is likely to be pretty minimal still ? I think I saw some benchmarks indicating 17% which isn't to be sneezed at, but real world, I doubt it would equate, am I right?

Unless I am mistaken there doesn't seem to be anything coming that would be worth upgrading to soon either?

Proposed Upgrade:

Asus Z170 Pro MB

32GB DDR4 Memory

6700K Intel Processor (I don't need i7 probably, but for relatively minimal difference in price, I'd rather have the extra grunt up my sleeve in case I started doing something that needed it.

The only time I ever see anywhere near decent usage of the CPU on my i7 4790 is exporting videos in premere. I keep wanting to upgrade but cannot justify it. Fallout 4 isnt maxing CPU and is stuttering and dropping to framerates acceptable only to console owners, but a friends 6700k does as well. Anything else is fine on it.

right now adventure capitilist is using 36% of my processor and lookeen is using 15%

That's weird, ad cap taking 3% for me, not got lookeen on this computer but I would suspect it is more disk bound so more CPU wont help since its spending all its time waiting on disk.

That's a lot of money for not much difference in performance.

If you want to go M2, just get a PCI-e adapter card to plug it into.

Yup have been seriously considering this.

I hope a decent speed upgrade is coming along soon. I get bored easily :) 3 x SSD's in a RAID0 amused me for a good long while, though performance doesn't really impress me as much as I hoped it would.

I have an Asus Z87-Pro Motherboard. According to specifications:

PCI Express 3.0 x16

2(x16 or dual x8)

PCI Express 2.0 x16

1(x4 mode)

PCI Express x1

4 x PCI Express x1

I assume my GTX970 Graphics card is in 1 of those 2 PCI Express 3.0 x16 slots, the question is, is it likely there is room for me to stick an expansion card in, and will that steal performance from the graphics card or hinder the performance of the Samsung Pro 850 M.2 SSD I am considering the purchase of?

All the cards I have seen, are PCI-e x 4

PCIe 2.0 -- 4 Gbit/s (500 MB/s) per lane i.e. 2GB/s for 4 lanes...

PCIe 3.0 -- 7.877 Gbit/s (984.6 MB/s) per lane

So more than enough bandwidth - even for PCIe 2.0

/edit ... btw I would probably put it in in one of the PCI3.0 slots.... x8 is generally fine for video cards, if they are PCIe 3.0 edit/
