Hey Guys,

I'm looking at building a new gaming rig and wanting to stay under $3.5k

It's been a long while since I built my last one so i'm a little out of touch. Would anyone change anything about this list and if so, why?

I know there will be a few people on here that are Radeon lovers, but I have a new G-Sync monitor so would like to stick with the GeForce range when it comes to the graphics.

You planning on overclocking ? If not, wouldnt bother with the water cooler IMHO.

Id probably swap the 1TB drive for at least a 2TB - dosent take long to fill up space these days with the AAA games taking 40GB+ easily :)

Thank you for your feedback.

I was going for a "future proofing rig" as much as you can do that these days. Wasn't looking to OC right away but it's something i'd look into in the future.

I have 10TB of external storage space for all the none program data. I have an entertainment system for all the movies and such that I store :)

I'd switch the 860 EVO out for a 960 EVO.. about another $100 but _way_ faster.

Stock coolers are hopeless, my I7 was well over 70 degrees, I swapped to a CooleMaster 120V water cooled unit and now CPU doesn't get any hotter than 45 degrees. If you want your CPU to last keep it cool.

Which gen i7 tho ?

Later Intel coolers are pretty good (IME anyway). My G3258 overclocks to 4.2GHz on the stock cooler with very little heat increase.

I would would assume that if you are getting an unlocked chip you are going to overclock (or be sorely tempted to - this is Geekzone after all!) in the future. In that case I'd stick with the water cooler.

Probably not a great deal of benefit for gaming at present, but from what I understand future games should be better optimised for multiple cpu cores.

Depending on how long your willing to wait, my spidey sense has been tingling (reading online) that Nvidia are about to announce there new range of consumer GPU's this month... this could have a couple of effects, one being that new cards may be just around the corner, the other that the current cards may get a price drop.

If you want your comp soon, then your setup looks good with the modifications mentioned above.
as with all this kind of information, it is mainly rumors...

Are you happy to import pieces from overseas i.e. Amazon? The reason I ask, is I just picked up 2x8GB Corsair Vengeance 3200MHz for $301 delivered to NZ. I also know you can save a bit more on some of your other components in the same manner.

And any potential warranty claims etc.....

In regards to the comment made about waiting for Nvidia to announce a new video card series, you could wait but find theyre not shipping for another 6 months - then hear AMD/ATI are releasing a new one to compete a month after Nvidias are due... so you wait... and the game begins ;) Also you'll be fighting BTC miners for them ;)

With video cards, I tend to buy the best that I can afford at the time, and be happy with it. :)

As BT slowly dries up GPU will drop in price as demand will drop, market will also become flooded with second hand GPU's. I'd say in 2 years time GPU's will be much cheaper.
