Hey!

I moved to Xnet broadband a month ago and I turned off interleaving to try and reduce my ping on Warcraft III Battle.net. A lot of the time I experience lower ping and delay while playing games. But sometimes, when I'm lagging (off peak times when Xnet users are stealing all my brandwidth), my ping of Battle.net is a lot lower then what my in game delay is. For example, I logged onto battle.net just after midnight last night and had 170 ping at log in, which is great, but when I played a game I had huge delay. I guess that my real ping was around 400.

My question is, now that interleaving is off, why does Battle.net say my ping is a lot lower at log in then it really is? I didn't have this problem when interleaving was on.

Sounds like you've changed two variables at once - ISP and interleaving. Interleaving does lower ping, however moving to Xnet likely increases ping compared to other ISP's due to the issues they have at peak times, and especially at midnight due to the torrent plan, which kicks in at midnight causing everyone's ping to skyrocket.

As i understand it, Warcraft III is an RTS which usually will connect peer to peer rather than a client-server model. So i would imagine ping to battlenet is the main server with listed games, but ping in game will be to the people you are playing with. This is assuming it works the same way as other RTS games.

I'd like to hear about how xnet goes over the next few months since their service has pretty much been useless from a gamers perspective as far as i can tell, however the purchase of more bandwidth and pushing the torrent plan to 2am will hopefully fix this.

I was playing on Battle.net ladder, which is hosted on a Blizzard server.

I'd like to hear about how xnet goes over the next few months since their service has pretty much been useless from a gamers perspective as far as i can tell, however the purchase of more bandwidth and pushing the torrent plan to 2am will hopefully fix this.

Do you know the scoure of this information? It's great news. :)

Purchase of more bandwidth i'm not sure on - i kinda just heard a rumour however xnet have confirmed the start of the torrent plans free 75gb downloading will now begin at 2am, probably changes december or something. As you might have noticed as soon as it hits midnight all latency and speeds are shot to hell since this is when everyone's download managers are set to turn on.
Since xnet doesnt (at least didnt use to) throttle or prioritise, this minority of leechers manages to take up the whole pipe and leave nothing for anyone else.

As far as i understand it anyway - i'm thankfully not on xnet.

(who, mind you, used to be top of the ISP's for gaming this time last year)

Lastly, i suggest checking out Geekzone's xnet forum for discussion of issues or support (though this one has been done to death). There are custome support people on there, though seem to have have gone awol due to the complaints?
Also GPForums has their own 100+ page xnet thread which is pretty much full of people discussing this exact issue over several months. Theres 3 xnet CSR's who regularly give their unofficial opinion or updates on things in that thread also.

Orcon is exactly the same as Xnet when it comes to gaming on International Servers...CRAP ! My ping is fine ! But the latency is terrible and hopeless when gaming. I do speed tests and you can see the stop and start bursts of bandwidth creeping along the pipe. This is what causes all our lag...inconsistent stop/start bandwidth streaming. You will notice it while watching You Tube as well where it buffers constantly. I never had any problems like this last year...it was perfect. Pure and simple.... it is these big companies that lack the service they promise as they have not purchased enough bandwidth for all these customers that flood them. I'd like just one I.S.P that dedicates itself to gamers only....forget torrents, P2P. When I game I want what I'm paying for... at Orcon I am not...RIPPED OFF !!!!

What I.S.P is best for gamers? I'm talking the little guys who can give me the same amount of bandwidth consistently each month like I once used to get. There must be one little I.S.P out there?

The best ISP's for gaming at the moment have pretty much been agreed that its the two biggest players - Telecom and Telstraclear. Maxnet i'm told is also very good, but a bit more expensive for data.
