I have a wii purchased in hawaii when on holiday is it possible to change region of console to play my pal games bought in NZ on it?
can enable homebrew and stuff if necesary

AFAIK you will need to get your console moded.

I had also heard that when you go to play a game, the game checks to see if your console is up to date. So if you mod it now, and buy a new game in a years? time it might not work, as it will think your console is too old.
I do not know how the mod chip would manage that situation.

Yeah you need to get it modded as above, just be careful though

Apparently last months firmware, detects if it's modded and has bricked a lot of consoles.
Which is quite a pain when some people have wifi and auto update on :S

do a search for 4.2 breaks modded and unmodded consoles. It was nintendos attempt at stopping piracy

Good lesson of buying consoles from oversea... Don't buy it while on travel or in overseas - especially of different region/colour-code (NTSC-N, NTSC-A, NTSC-J and PAL-EU and PAL-AU/NZ)...

In the end, the money saved will not shine to well when buying locally with local warranty and CGA protection and most importantly, the PAL-content.

Internet is my backyard...

Just do your research before choosing which Modchip to get - there are some that have a small flash memory for upgrading their firmwares to cope with new Wii firmwares (like the WiiKey, I believe there is a new version of this out that is compatible with the latest Wii board configurations too).

Bottom line is that it shouldn't really be a problem.
