Hi all,

Topic subject says it all. I'm currently playing Bad Company 2 and I'm thoroughly enjoying myself :) and I thought I'd want to play something similar but set in the future (note: Bad Company 2 was my first ever Battlefield game).

So I was thinking about getting 2142 but it's an older game. For those of you who have both, do you think it's worth getting it? Would I be disappointed (either with the graphics or with the gameplay etc)? I've seen some youtube videos and they look ok. And about the ranks, I'd imagine I'll be the only one with the lowest rank with everyone else being at highest levels. Would this hamper my progress? Oh and the most crucial thing is.... population. Are there still heaps of people playing (many servers still running)?

Thanks!

PS: it's for the PC if it makes a difference..

I think there is at least 1 NZ based server and a bunch of aussie ones.. Some of my clan mates still play 2142 on a fairly regular basis.

Thanks. So do you think it's a bit late to join? I mean in terms of levels and stuff or it's never too late?

In terms of leveling up, all you get is better gear. It offers some advantage but not a huge amount. You'll still be able to hold your own, and you'll be able to pick up the kit of those you kill if you want to try out the higher gear.

It also has a 'field upgrade' feature. If you are in a squad that is doing well and following your squad leader's orders, you can get an upgrade. This allows you to get gear 'one level up' from what you are now. You keep the gear as long as your are logged into that server.

You'll be fine. You'll suck when you start anyway, as you learn the weapons, maps and vehicles, and by the time you've got that mastered, you'll have most of the gear you need or want anyway.

2142 is really just a multiplayer game though. There is no story campaign, and the AI is rubbish - so play one game single player to master the key layout, then dive into the servers.

As a side note - online play is both Mac and PC on the same servers. As it is one of the very few Mac FPS around, I imagine that the online servers will stick around for a while for them. I have a mac, and play it sometimes.

I was really disappointed with BF2142. Not as great as other BF series.

Do whatever you want to do man.

This is true.

Would I have purchased it if there were was a better selection of games for Mac?

No way.

I still play Battlefield 2, plenty of aussie servers to play on, 60-100 latency very playable even though the aussies have 20 ping compare with our 80. Theres about 6 aussies servers that are always populated. Best  servers for me are Jrkyboys and O.M.G

Was thinking of giving 2142 a go but was wondering the same. I was told 2142 is practically dead for kiwis/aussies no one plays that anymore expect Americans.

Whar was wrong with 2142? When I played it I found it to be a great game to play and the servers were amazing for the amount of people playing on them. Or was that just me years ago?
