My PS3 (FAT 80G model CECHJ02) disk loader does not want to take any discs, i can push them in but nothing happens. Sometimes it does take them after a lot of mechanical clicking and clunking, then sometimes it just takes them normally. Today a game my son was playing just froze and i couldnt exit, had to switch off the PS3. After second time it crashed i just unplugged the machine and came on here.

I have read on a PS3 forum, that there may be a screw you can turn to rotate the disc mechanism manually to realign it, but cant seem to find the panel. Only panel i can find is for the hardrive.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Personally, I would get it seen to by a pro. If it's something simple like you suspect it won't cost much to fix.

I don't have much to offer with regards to fixing the underlying cause, but if you do get a disc stuck in the ps3 drive, turn the ps3 off with the switch at the back, then turn it back on whilst holding the eject button.
This will force the disc to eject, and also the fans will run at full for about 10 seconds.
Turn the switch back off, leave it for a few seconds, then turn it back on normally.

The Blu-ray drive inside the ps3 is actually a separately sealed unit itself.

I'm not sure about the screw turning method. I'm not sure how it would work when the drive is sealed inside the ps3.

Managed to fix it myself.

Well my choice was trademe or $300 for a refurbishment from Sony as out of warranty. I decided to open her up.

Lots of videos and tips on utube. Managed to get rid of the clicking, but still was not reading any discs so i opened it back up and decided to clean the lens with some isopropyl alcohol.

Dabbed a bit on the lens and cleaned some of the loader cogs and ratchets which seemed to have sticky brown residue on them. Had a slight mishap when one of the springs and cogs flew across the room, but guessed them back into right position.

Seems to be working now, but after taking it apart, i realise that the ps3 isnt the long lasting sony of old, very flimsy mechanisms. My sony dvd home theatre was over 20 years old before it started playing up!

Anyway all good, and although i would not advise doing it yourself unless you have a lot of patience,half a day spare and do not mind risking making it worse, it can be done.

How do you have a DVD player that is 20 years old?!

Sorry about 15 years, my brother gave it to me about 10 years ago. DVD function stopped last week;) Amp and speakers still work though;)
