This may sound stupid but..

Recently my Dad purchased a Samsung Galaxy S3.

And since then, the ADSL connection on our router drops out and/or gets really low line rates. Funny thing is, he's not here right now, and the connection speed is great! I'm waiting for him to come back to see if it affects the speeds at all.

The whole time, I've though it was something to do with my ISP (Slingshot), but today it hit me. We've only been having speed issues since he bought that phone. So, just wondering if it is at all possible for a cell phone to interfere with ADSL connections like that? Or is it just a coincidence that the speeds pick up when the phone isn't here? I just had a visit from a Chorus tech and he found nothing wrong with the phone boxes and modem, have also called Slingshot several times to see if it was anything on their end, and they've not found anything (which is why they sent the Chorus tech around)

Thanks.

Could it be that the SG3 is connected to your home wifi network and just 'chugging' away at your broadband?
Whats your current broadband speed?

How close to the ADSL modem does he hold the phone?

I did once see a GSM 900 phone placed on top of a Telecom (now Chorus) 2Mbps line terminating unit and it reset the connection. But that was with the phone directly sitting on top of the unit while the phone was transmitting.

Dodgy phone charger blasting RF through the home wiring which is messing with the signal over the phone line where it is near a power line? I admit it's a bit of a stretch.

If your computers are connected via WiFi only and the handset is also connected via WiFi then perhaps it's using too much of the wireless bandwidth?

Other than this, hard to see how it could interfere with DSL specifcally.

So I think I've found the problem. My Dad's phone had the wireless hotspot enabled. So I disabled it, and so far, so good. When he was home, the speeds I were getting were around 0.4megabits per second downstream and upstream, and the SNR would drop to around 4-5dB. If the hotspot was the problem, how would using your phone as a wireless hotspot affect the line rates on the router? This is probably highly unlikely/impossible but it almost seems as if the router was trying to use the phones hotspot as it's internet source (for lack of a better term). Could that happen?

Ahh, got to watch that, I must admit iOS will automatically shut down the hotspot if there are no connections for 10min, would be a good feature for android hotspot.
