Hello Geeks,

I am about to join the broadband fraternity with ihug and I have a couple of questions

I need to purchase a budget Wireless Router/Modem that will work well with my PC Desktop and Mac PowerBook, any recommendations?
Will it make a large difference if i go for separates’?
Is their anyone in Nelson that supplies a better internet connection than ihug?

Hi, Ive been using a Belkin F5D7633 and had no problems at all. Has a good Firewall and in the 8months I have had it its never missed a beat. I get good coverage through out our house and into the back garden, only drops one bar on the Laptop at the far end of house and garden.

Ascent have them for $165 http://www.ascent.co.nz/ProductSpecification.aspx?ItemID=338630 I noted in Harvey Norman the other day they had them for $230 so I would give HN a miss. I have ordered quite a few products through Ascent and found their service to be great, normally next day.

As for seperates or a combined unit, I think the convienece of a single box is usefull, only would concider a seperate setup when the wifi AP would need to be sited away from the rest of my wired lan devices, not an issue for me as I get good coverage throughout our house which is over 30meters long.

Chur Cyril,

Have talked to our IT geeks downstairs and they only reccomend the exspensive ones, go figure.

is this Belkin baby able to support ADSL2? If we ever get it?

ADSL2+ is all at the ready, just connect to a ADSL2+ DSLAM and wait for the backhaul to weeeze its last.

Oh, and your IT folk, would they recommend the expensive ones if it came out of their pocket? :)

My current set up is a desktop with a 3.4GHz AMD64 bit and a Mac G3 powerbook. We have only recently joined the broad band fraternity but have modem or router yet as i am purchasing one so i don't have to go on a fixed contract. I didn't like the feel of the free modems and routers.

1. - Is it worth going for a MIMO router.
2. - If MIMO is the go, is there any all in ones or is it best to go for a 2 pot system ie - the dlink DI-634M router with a 502 modem.
3. - It i was stay away from MIMO for now so as to fill the gap till 802.11n hits the mainstream, am i best to go for a combo system (seperate modem and router) or one of the combo babies?

any help, advice, do'd, don'ts and others experiences would be grand.

Back in May this year I installed a 3Com "combo baby" to replace an old Nokia M1122 and have been very happy with it. There have been no problems at all. I tried to find a link to the specs for you, but it has been replaced by a newer version now.

I have also had good experiences with ZyXEL equipment (provided by Campbell Software).

I would say definitely DON'T BUY D-LINK at present. There are too many quality problems.

Regarding Combo, or separate Modem and Router, there is no reason not to go for a Combo unit. It's much easier to set up and one less box and power adapter to put on your shelf.

MIMO will be of benefit if you have a large house, but otherwise there's probably no reason to bother with it as it's likely to be more expensive. There may also be some benefit to using a MIMO router if you do large File Transfers over wireless between several PCs, but if it's only for Internet Access, then you won't see any benefit at all.
