just cheap and reliable
minimum of 2 lan ports

With other TP-Link hardware it's indicated the chipset type with T being Trendchip.

Functionally, they're the same- 'ish' bandwidth speed wise.

Depends on your needs.

My observations are as follows:

The TP-8840 supports half-bridge and syslog to server, so for basics it's the better device.

The TP-8840T does not support half bridge, doesn't support syslog to server, but does have VLAN tagging for VCs... which is handy for probably two people in New Zealand.

The TP-Link TP-8840 is no longer on sale in New Zealand.
