Hi all,

I have a Wag310g and have been using this for a number of years with Xnet connection and to date its been an acceptable device. Unfortunately with the world we are now living in and the increased demands on wireless connections I am having some trouble with the reliability and coverage of WIFI within my home. Tv and phones etc struggle to get a reliable connection on the ground floor of our 2 story home with the wireless router being on the 2nd floor in a room (that room has PC's connected through ethernet so dont really want to change location of the router)

I was trying to find a better VOIP router which had stronger or better WIFI coverage but couldn't really find anything that was going to be a big improvement on the wag310g. Are there any i have missed?

I need to either find a new router or add something that improves the WIFI coverage downstairs.

One thing I am sure is relevant but not sure how to use is the house has cat5 cable installed throughout the house, so has access points downstairs and in other rooms - but I dont know how to us these to extend range / reliability?

Can anyone please suggest some things to try to improve stability and range of network to both upstairs and down?

Thanks, appreciate any suggestions.
David

The simplest solution is to spend ~$40 on a 2nd WiFi access point to place downstrairs. You simply need to connect this into one of the LAN port on your router using your structured cabling.

I unfortunately can't tell you how to use your own struccutred cabling system but it should be fairly straight forward - every jackpoint should be labelled, so you simply need to patch the two together with a cat5e patch cable that correspond to the port next to the WAG310G and the new AP.

Thanks,

Its setup as cat5e but there's no labeling on the sockets just Clipsal and 5e,  guess trial and error works as there's only 4 sockets.

So you refer to it as an AP, what sort of devices would be included in this? just a standard wifi router? And then do I need to make any basic settings to allow it to use the other router ?

Sorry for basic questions but am new to this stuff.

Cheers

You don't want a router as you have no need for any routing capabilities, you just need a basic WiFi AP.

No changes are required to your router. Just configure the AP for DHCP or a static IP address on your LAN so you can get into it, set the SSID and security to be the same as your router WiFi if you want roaming, and select another channel remembering 1,6 and 11 are the only ones that don't overlap.

Thanks I'll have a look at PB tech and go and buy one and install later this week. Appreciate the responses.
