Hey I was wanting to know if anyone could offer me some help on Net Send Messenging on a small network I have setup up at home. Me and my parents want to setup the service so it is easy to send messages to each other.

My computer has windows 2000 professional (SP4) installed and i have enabled the messenger service and also disabled my firewall.

On my parents computer they have Windows XP Professional (SP2) the firewall is disabled, but when i go to the services under there computer there is no messenger service for me to activate, so i can not send messages to my parents computer and viceversa unless my parents computer has this service avalible.

I have searched for solutions but no luck so far.

Im connecting the two computers with a CAT 6 Crossover cable and the network adapters are both 3COM 10/100 Network Cards.

Is there any special files i have to download or a program?

Any idea's?

right click on my computer -> click on manage ->services and applications -> services. right click on the messenger item and click properties. Change start up type to automatic and click the start button.

No I cant, as i said before, on my parents pc there is no messenger service for me activate.

XPSP2 didn't deprecate the future, just turn it off and set it to disabled

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, change the Startup type of the Messenger service to Automatic, and then start the Messenger service. To do this, follow these steps:

1.	Open Windows Explorer.
2.	In the left pane, right-click My Computer, and then click Manage.
3.	In the Computer Management window, expand Services and Applications in the left pane, and then click Services.
4.	In the right pane, double-click Messenger.
5.	In the Messenger Properties (Local Computer) dialog box, click the General tab.
6.	On the General tab, select Automatic from the Startup type list, and then click Apply.
7.	Under Service status, click Start, and then click OK.

Messenger really isn't in the list?

how about from a cmd prompt, what does

net start messenger

do?

If it all gets too hard, I would suggest using Skype. It's great for sending Text Messages (using the Chat function) and it's free
