Hi guys,

I'm at a dead end of ideas for how to fix my network. Here is the setup so far:

I have a D-Link DSL-502T adsl modem from Xtra Broadband and have bought a D-Link DI-524UP wireless print server to wirelessly connect the 3 laptops in my house to the internet. I also have a Canon Pixma MP170 connected to the usb slot on the wireless print server.

I have configured the adsl modem, so that if its plugged into my laptop directly via cable and is not plugged into my wireless print server, then I can access the net fine. Also, if I just use the wireless print server without the modem, I can get a wireless network setup fine and use the printer no problem.

BUT, this is where the problem starts....

To get the internet to work fine WITH the wireless router, I've had to turn off the DHCP client on the wireless router, which then causes the printer to stop working because it isn't assigned a IP address!

So basically, I've had to turn the wireless router into a normal hub/switch and let the adsl modem do all the IP address work. When in fact, I want the complete opposite to happen, so I can have the printer assigned an IP address.

Please can someone help, because I really want to use my printer on what I thought would be a relatively simple network to setup. I thought that both being D-Link products, they'd co-exist quite well. Not true at the moment. PLEASE HELP!!

I had very similar problems with my sister in law, a D-Link DI-524 connecting to the standard Telecom D-Link 504 modem.

Found that with the router connecting the modem via its lan port (effectively making 2 networks) that her wireless would be really garbage.  Tried friguring out if the router to authenticate with Xtra (I think they use PPPoA and the Router PPPoE) so that didn't look possible.

In the end I did the same as you, connected the router via a lan port (making it a switch) and turned off DHCP on the router making all machines get addresses from the modem.

I'm surprised your printer doesn't pick up an address??  You say it's connected via a cable to the router??   Aah, ok, have engaged brain now, and re-read your post.

I wonder if you could try saying that your router is on the same lan as the modem (10.1.1.0) and assign a static address to your printer???

Thanks for your help. I lost my patience with it and just rang d-link who managed to sort it out for me. A loooooooong process of just restarting the modem and router over and over again. They earnt their money that day!
