When gaming I get very high latency and disconnects. If I ping the router during play I get a high response time (30-150ms) as well as periods of 3-10 timeouts in a row. On rare occasions I am able to play without any problems but I have yet to determine any pattern. Most of the time all other internet activities are fine, web browsing, downloading etc. But a few times a day I will temporarily lose internet access (yellow triangle over wireless icon) for about a minute. Other times the yellow triangle will not be there but I will be unable to access any webpages, they just hang, restarting my PC is the only way to fix this.

edit: Programs like steam and mumble will drop connection and reconnect about once every 30 minutes or so.

I have replaced the router and my wireless card. I have reinstalled windows. The problem only started after living here for quite a while, so it is not related to the house as far as I can tell.

I have yet to try with a wired connection as the layout of the flat makes it a bit impractical.

My Specs:
Windows 7
Gigabyte GA-H77M-D3H LGA 1155 Rev 1.0
Intel i3-2120 3.3Ghz
AMD Radeon HD6670
8GB DDR3-1333 RAM
TL-WN881ND Wireless Card
TD-W8960N Modem/Router

My ISP is Telecom.

Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

Have you tried changing the channel of your wifi ?

Scan the wifi networks around you and see what channel they are using.

Hey,

There are no other wireless networks in range.

Thanks.

You do realise this is exactly what will happen to a wireless connection when it's saturated?

I'm not sure if there is actually a problem here or you're merely saturating your WiFi.

How would I check if the wireless was being saturated? This often occurs when no one else is home and none of my flatmates leave torrents going.

I have also used my phone to ping the router and it gets normal ping responses while my PC is getting time outs.

Thanks!

This suggests to me it might be an issue with the wireless card in your computer.  Perhaps try another one or the one you have installed in another computer.

Best solution: Run cat5/6 through the flat.  It is much more reliable.  I recently moved in to a new flat and ran 60 meters of cable.  I can't stand wireless.  Smartphones are the only thing that connects to it.

Hey,

I have already replaced my wireless card, no change.

I plan on running a cable through the flat sometime soon and seeing if that helps. If not then it will give me more information. I may also try a USB dongle.

Thanks!

There is an XKCD page for everything!

Not just other WiFi devices that cause interference, DECT phones, microwaves, baby monitors ...  moto is .. don't use WiFi for gaming :-)

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

This is a common problem with wireless drivers and how they interact with windows, try this application which gives you control options over things like autoconfig, background scanning and streaming mode.
