First post here so bear with me if these questions have been already asked - I can't seem to find a way to search effectively.

Objective - Talk over Yahoo Messenger Voice using headsets

Equipment - Toshiba Satellite 100 running XP - soon to be Vista
- Generic Bluetooth dongle with licensed IVT BlueSoleil software - as below

The dongle appears to install OK, and the driver is set to the IVT Bluetooth driver, which says is operating correctly. But the two will not connect - the pc does not see a device at all. I went with no security to eliminate passkey issues. Ericsson website says their Bluetooth gear is completely compatible, but their CSR says the headset was designed for cell phone, and they have no idea if it will work.

Anybody have any ideas to try, or does this sound hopeless.

Welcome to Geekzone... Even though the headset was "desgined for mobile" it will work. The BlueSoleil software supports the required profile, so that's not the problem.

First, make sure you put the headset in "discoveable" mode. In most headsets this is accomplished by starting with it off, pressing the power button and keep it pressed for a few seconds after it turns on. It should make a beep noise and start flashing some blue and red LEDs. Check the manual to find out how it works on your headset.

Once this is done, start a search on your PC. This should find the headset. Now, the pairing key will vary depending on manufacturer, and you can't go without it on headset. Most use "0000" (four zeros) as default, again check the manual.

Once your PC finds the headset and you select it to pair, enter the pairing key when requested.

After that, you have to "connect". Find the icon corresponding to the headset in the BlueSoleil interface and you should have an option to connect. This could be in the menu or right-click menu. Once you select this option your headset should "beep" like it would do when announcing an incoming call. At this point click the "answer" button on the headset and you should be connected.

When it shows connected then you can start the program that wants to use the sound through Bluetooth, or start a phone call. IF no sound comes out, make sure the sound device selected in the Control Panel | Sounds applet is the Bluetooth one, not the PC's sound card. And again, if you change this here you have to restart the program you want to use with the Bluetooth headset.

Thanks so much for the reply.

With this headset, the discoverable mode works by holding down the power key for 5 seconds. It should then blink red/green a few times and make a chime. What happens is that it chimes, blinks red four times and that is it. IVT Bluesoliel screen does not find the unit. Is that what you mean by start a search on my computer for the headset?

I am thinking maybe I have a bad dongle. Its' little green light blinks, but maybe it's screwed otherwise. If you think this set-up should work, then I'll have to try another dongle.

After you put the headset in "discoverable" mode you have to click the Search option. I think the BlueSoleil search starts when you click the "Sun" ("Soleil") in the UI. But it should also have a menu option for that. Just turning the device discoverable won't show it.

Also, make sure the headset is fully charged. It sounds as it is turning itself off after you power it on? Or just my impression? A good test would be try using it with another device or mobile phone - this is the easiest way to make sure the headset is ok, and you are operating it correctly.

OK, I set the headset to discoverable by holding down the button (which shows me an incorrect LED code), and then when I click the 'sun' in the middle of the BlueSoliel UI, it tells me that no new devices are found.

I charged the unit 8 hours per instructions, but I'll let it go overnight to be sure. Unfortunately, I don't have any other bluetooth devices at the moment...sigh. But I do have another dongle at my other house that I can try tomorrow.

OK, I managed to get 'some' success. I am at my other house on my Compaq Presario desktop. I managed to get connected to my headset. Pretty straight forward.

But the audio is horrible. It pulses in and out with a precision beat. Static (or sound if receiving) for one sec then nothing for one sec.

Not sure how to start fixing this. I have the xp2 service pack, but maybe it's a stack problem. I have no idea where to start with this. Help.....

How is the CPU usage on this PC? The older Bluetooth software/hardware combination had big problems with computers running on high CPU. Nothing much you can do about it.

I know it works fine - at least on my laptop I can use my Bluetooth headset for hours (one of my gaming sessions with a friend lasted six hours and the voice connection over Skype was stable and in use all the time) without any hiccup. But my laptop was running at 50% CPU (it's a 64 bit dual core machine), so fairly decent CPU... And the hardware and software are pretty new as well.

The system is an AMD Althon XP 2600+
2.13 GHz, 1 gig of Ram

The system doesn't seem loaded down at all - CPU usage less tha 20%, usually around 10%. I also set yahoo and bluesoleil to realtime processing.

The cutting in and out is so perfectly repeatable, it must be some knid of set-up issue. I'm trying new things, but I'm really grasping in the dark with my knowledge level.
