Hi There,

I have been using a Cisco SRP521W router for several months now, which was provided by Vodafone under their UFB trial programme. I have been pretty pleased with its performance and am able to reach download speeds close to 90mbps.

However, I have one problem with it. If I connect my laptop to my office server using a VPN client, the laptop fails to shut down normally (using Start button) and I end up having to force a shutdown. I have tried two laptops and two VPN clients (Sonic Wall & Dell?) but made no difference. This problem was not there when I used a Netgear DGN2000 router with my old ADSL2+ connection.

At the moment I am managing with Citrix & a Webmail Service to access office server and email, but am keen to start using the VPN connection which effectively gives the same desktop appearance as that in the office.

Any suggestions / advice will be highly appreciated.

Thanks & Regards,

Interesting problem. I have been using a SRP521W for years now and never seen this - using SSTP and OpenVPN here.

Not a solution to the problem at hand but just a note: the SRP521W won't go faster than 85 Mbps because of its processor speeds. Also it doesn't help it doesn't have gigabit ports. I actually had to change routers to get past 100 Mbps in my cable connection.

As a suggestion, if you want to really use UFB to the max, change to a router with gigabit in all ports and fast enough to route all packets a fast connection will throw at it.

Thanks freitasm. Can you suggest a particular make/model of a router? I also note that my router gives a significantly lower speed when I use wireless. The speeds I mentioned in my posting is with an ethernet connection.

Thanks & regards

Maybe you could post what you expect wireless speeds to be. The SRP520 series will deliver up to about 60Mbps in good RF conditions using 40Mhz channels. This is pretty good performance wireless wise.

In many urban environments wireless is a lost cause and you'll struggle to get good performance or speeds unless you're willing to spend big $$ on equipment.

I cannot get anywhere near 60Mbps on wireless with the router just a few metres away. However, I can achieve speeds above 80Mbps using a LAN connection on a good day. My main concern however is the shutting down issue which I raised in my original posting.

Thanks

You do really need to understand the limitations of wireless - it's not a replacement for Ethernet, it's a complementary solution.

No ideas about the router, I've deployed huge numbers of these and never had any issues. I also really struggle to see how a router could be responsible for such an issue.
