Hi
My daughter has snap broadband internet via PPOE on an Ethernet port on her wall.

We're trying to share this with the rest of the flat via a netcomm N300 wireless router. Is this possible?

We can login with the mac via Ethernet cable.

We can also login via the mac Ethernet to router Ethernet port when the router is connected to the wall via a further Ethernet cable.

I was hoping to 'bridge' the Ethernet to the wireless.

Is it possible to share the broadband connection through the router?

Without knowing the full setup it's a little hard to comment but it sounds like a dead simple setup - just configure the PPPoE credentials in the router.

Plug the router WAN port into the ethernet plug on the wall,
Log into the router and set the PPPoE stuff on its WAN setup page

Enable the built in wireless within the router and enjoy.

I understand that WAN —> Router via PPOE —>wireless out is possible, but I'm just not getting it to work.

When I tried to set up the PPOE login on the router, it tells us there's no DSL, and doesn't appear to connect.

I was hoping that there might have been a way to connect the ethernet ports to the wireless broadcast/reciever

You've got a modem/router. You just need a wireless router (without the modem bit).

Your router is configured with it's inbuilt DSL modem being the WAN port. You need to check if there is an option in it's configuration menu to make one of it's Ethernet ports the WAN port. If not then you will have to buy a new router as per what has already been said.

If you have a normal ADSL modem/router, then the WAN (external network) side of the modem expects to connect to a phone line, and the internal side of the network will have ethernet port and/or WiFi.

You need a straight router, so the WAN port is an ethernet port, not a modem that connects to a phone line.

Some modem/routers can be configured to use one of the ethernet ports as a WAN port, instead of using the modem port - you will need to see if your modem supports this feature. If it does, great, if it doesn't then there is no way to use it in your situation, and you will need to buy a standalone router instead.

If you can advise the exact model number, someone should be able to advise if your modem can be used for this or not.

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

I checked in with daughter number two yesterday and the appearance of a newer model modem/router seems to have resolved the issue

I'm guessing this is at UC Halls of Residence.. you may also need to add some static/manual routes if they need to access any resources on the local network (which would normally become unavailable when PPPoE is connected). Some routers do this better than others. I can dig out a list of the routes to add if the topic ever came up

Right, I can see how that might be useful, I have a feeling though that they've stuck with the hardwired route to their internal net and are accessing that in their rooms, the wireless is something they're sharing centrally

If I get an inkling of the issue I'll come back and get the resources, cheers
