Hello, regarding the concept of a virtual switch stack.
If for instance, I have two switches in a stack. I want them to operate as a layer 3 virtual stack with layer 3 VLAN interfaces.
I configure this stack with the layer 3 VLAN interfaces. Now, if one switch dies, does the other switch still continue providing the layer 3 VLAN interfaces ?

Hi, yes it will continue routing as a layer 3 switch, but clearly the ports of the dead switch will be ...... dead.

But only virtually dead surely? Wouldn't that be the same as virtually (but not actually) working?

Hi, regardless of what symantics you put on it, a virtual stack is a group of switches that share an interconnected backplane and create a intercommunications protocol that allows them to share their configuration and present themselves as if a single switch of port count being the sum of the member switches. If one of the members dies the switch will continue to work sans the dead ports. As such the layer3 vlan interfaces will continue to operate as will the inter vlan interface routes, but the ports of the dead switch will be missing, or am I missing something.

Edit, although purhaps your question attains to commander/master, slave and other members, most switch vendors use subltly different details on this, but if the stack has say 3 or more members and both the nominated master and slave die then as I recall its all over rover even though you might have several other memebers in the stack but only passive members, only the master or slave can keep the config active, again I could be wrong.
