Hi everyone, so I finally got around to preparing for an install of a dsl mastersplitter. I've done a fare bit of research and brought what I think are the correct tools and equipment required for the install. I've gotten lucky and there seems to be cat cable installed throughout the house though I cant tell if the cable is cat 5/5e or 6. But my main reson for this post is I opened up the jackpoint which I believe is the primary point of entry for the connection and have found that there are 3 cables. I've purchased a rj45 jackpoint (which I think is right) and need to connect the cables to that but which of the three do I connect, any advice and help would be appreciated.

I've uploaded an image of the cables.

One of those three will probably go back to the demarc point where the cable from the street comes in. It would be best if you could find where that is, instal the filter there then feed the voice down the blue/white pair (as it currently is) and send the xDSL down the green/white pair.

Put a tone tool on the green pair at demarc and see where it ends up. Or short green pair and use multi meter.

The easiest way to find the feeder at that point would be to just pull a blue leg off the jack one at a time until the phone goes dead. Once it is dead you know what the feeder is.
After that go and whack the splitter in at the ETP. Send the DSL up on a spare pair (normally orange) and the whack that spare on a jack and all sorted.

Hey guys thanks heaps for the speedy replies, So just to confirm once I've found the cat cable that goes back to the demarc I only have to connect that cable to the RJ45 jackpoint and can leave the other cat cables there with no problems? Also I purchased a RJ45 CAT6 jackpoint,does it mater if the cable is CAT5 or 5e in the wall as I cant tell if its CAT6 or not. Cheers.

Its looks like Cat5e. Call it data cable, but theres no such thing as "cat cable". There is a thing we call "cat wire" that is used to make a catenary to hang cables off.

The cable that goes to the demarc shouldn't go directly to the RJ45, but if you can't get into he ETP then you could use it to feed the line side of the splitter. I guess you are planning to replace the single faceplate with a double one to take both the phone jack and RJ45 jack? The RJ45 needs to be a keystone type and you will need a clip that holds it into the PDL plate.

Time to find a new industry!

Hey thanks for the reply, so i managed to connect the splitter at the demarc, matching the colours up, green to green white to white etc, however after connecting up the rj45 jack and testing the speed its now halfed, by elimination i found the primary data cable but if i only connect the blue/white cable up I get connection without connection the other colours. Any advice would be appreciated.

A POTS line only uses a single pair and blue / blue white pair is the standard to use for voice.

You shouldn't be matching the colours up or it's not going to work - this isn't how it's supposed to be installed.

If you're in a VDSL2 coverage area the best option would have been to move to VDSL2 and let Chorus do all the work for you since you're not paying anything for it.

Oh, so I was under the impression I was to colour match the lines, blue voice, green data and orange line, could you please correct me? Unfourtunetly I'm unable to recieve vdsl as it's not avalible in my area yet =(.

Of course you are paying for it. Chorus charges ISPs $5/month for 30 months for VDSL with a splitter install.

That's $150 (+GST) of cost they have to build into the price of the plan.

And given some of the horror stories on here about Chorus' VDSL installs going horribly wrong I think the OP would be far better off getting coffeebaron to do it.

The colours on the filter indicate input and outputs. Depending where you are your Orange/White filter input connects to the incoming Blue/White. Then you can match Blue to existing phone jacks and use Green for your Data jack.
