Hi there, I am a small time youtuber that has run into a wee bit of trouble.

At times, there are users that D-Dos myself which as i assume most of you know, knocks me off for a period of time.

From my understanding A vpn will help protect me from such attacks.

My interenet service provider will not help me at all with obtaining a vpn.

In my touch screen router I have a Vpn Setting, however I do not know how to fill out the fields.

I have had a look at the free vpn services out there, however from past experiences, when somethings free, it's either sh*t or very
unreliable.

I do not want to spend an arm and a leg, so I was wondering if anyone in these forums had any recommendations??

Don't worry about all the fields in your router that are confusing you, all these settings will be provided by the VPN provider you choose.

I don't use a VPN so can't recommend one but I'm sure somebody will. The good thing is that most of the VPN providers offer a week free trial so you can see if it's for you or not.

None of them tie you into long contracts so you can always just leave and move to another anytime you wish.

Why do you get DDos by being a 'youtuber'? Is this common?

If your home connection is being DDOS attacked a VPN won't help. It creates a tunnel from your computer to another, then your traffic emerges to the internet there. So instead of your internet connection looking like it's in NZ it'll look like it's in say the USA. Your requests go out on the VPN and come back over it, but the main internet connection is still working and anyone who has your IP can still DDOS you. Of course if you're on a dynamic IP that constantly changes the VPN will mask your true IP, and if a DDOS starts you can just disconnect and connect to another server.

However I think we need more background on evidence that you are being targeted by a DDOS attack. They're not trivial to arrange - not that I've ever tried - I guess you'd have to get in touch with some shady characters or run a tool to find vulnerable hosts to exploit.

If you do want a VPN though check out Astrill VPN, works well for me.

As above. A VPN will not solve your problem.

What's the evidence you are being a victim of a DDoS? Is this from a report on your router saying "Attack?"

Or just slow Internet access in general?

Wrong guys - it's very likely a VPN will solve the problems by giving an essentially throwaway IP to the connection... Anyone attacking after getting riled up (somehow - I don't understand what he's doing to annoy people) will attack the VPN IP address, and if that's in the US/DE/UK/FR whatever, they may not bother if it's a personal attack and they can see it's obviously a VPN.

If attacked - switch to a different VPN server, problem solved... Well, Mitigated at least.

Astrill will work. Google for it. Use the windows based client.

Yes, but it's mitigated, won't be a permanent solution and things won't stop unless the OP finds out what's actually going on and fix it.

That's much like what I said, but have another read of my post around actual IP and if attackers already know it. Plus the whole scenario is just fishy and we need more information.

While its true that a VPN won't help much with a proper DDoS attack, a VPN would help assuming that the attackers
1) Don't know the actual IP of MrLoopFx's connection or that its dynamic,
2) The attack is just a DoS attack not a DDoS (seems likely for the sort of script kiddies that would attack a youtuber with a small following),

Then whoever has the biggest internet pipe wins. Moving MrLoopFX's public IP via VPN to a server in a decent data centre would change the game in the volume of traffic needed for an effective DoS attack. Instead of having to get enough to overwhelm a private internet connection they would have to generate enough to take out the whole of the VPN endpoint server's connection.

The other thing that I don't think anyone's mentioned and that MrLoopFX should be aware of is that VPN services inherently have a performance cost. They will add latency to connection when they are running because your connection to the internet has an extra loop in it to the VPN server before it even starts to try and get to an internet service. Not much of an issue unless you are trying to do something that requires low ping, like stream online gaming footage.

I would 'try before I buy' a few providers to see if they work with what it is you are trying to do quite as an aside to any possible DoS protection they may gain.
