Hi all.

Just after some advice.

I have an older fritz box 7340. Its not too bad and has been reliable so far, but I would like to get 802.11ac wireless, 7340 just supports a, b, g n.

The snap connection itself really isnt an issue, its the transferring of files locally within my network that is the issue. Its slow. Media server, devices etc all have ac wireless cards but the bottleneck is the fritz-box.

Currently on an old snap plan. 1000/500 connection with a gigatown deal happy with it. I dont really want to upgrade to a new 2degrees plan with free modem as the deal I have is good and upgrading would cost me more per month (only $5 i believe but still more), but I believe I can upgrade to a new fritz box for $199.

I guess what I'm after is advice on whether it is worthwhile paying $199 to upgrade my fritz box, or whether I should just get a wireless router and attach to the 7340.

The key question is if your current devices support both 5GHZ and 802.11ac?

I have the 7490 (received it free on signup) which I received from 2degrees. Its fast, but I have very limited 5GHZ/802.11ac devices.

Well then it should speed things up.

Is the op currently using 2.4GHZ or 5GHZ?
2.4 could be very congested which could be part of the problem?

What I do on my network is run the bandwidth hungry devices on the 5ghz spectrum.
Even my 802.11n devices seem to run better (PS3/Roku etc...) Far less congestion from neighbors etc..

I had a 7340 and I think its only 2.4ghz.. (it might have been 5Ghz too but i dont think it was dualband so you had to use either 2.4 or 5ghz). I was not particularly happy with the wireless on that router to be quite honest.. it didnt really have the range... the throughput was ok.

I found moving it to a better position will help a lot... Or you could get something that has a stronger wireless signal. But yeh that modem will work well for gigatown.. but you not gonna pull more than about 150mbps on wifi.

as for your question the 7340 has only 2 Gig ethernet ports on it.. and port 1 is used by the UFB. So unless you have a gigabit switch then you probably want to replace the router.. If you do have a gigabit switch then I would probably not waste money and buy a 2.5ghz/5Ghz dual band decent quality wifi unit.

you might find that the difference between an dual band access point and a new router is not much difference in price.. but if you are on snap i think you need vlan tagging support so be careful if you replace the router to make sure it will work with your ISP.
