Hi all,

I just got my UFB installed on Thursday. Long story short, the optical box and router are now a bedroom so they didn't have to drill the exposed wooden floor...

The optical box is on the wall and the Huawei 659 router is just sitting on the floor next to it..

Because the sockets on the router come out the back - it is not suitable for screwing to the wall.

Vodafone run the telephone through to the router rather than to ONT, so the telephone line is connected to the modem.

Could someone point me in the right direction of a router that will support the phone output?

@GavinC The HG659 that you already have a POTS phone port on it or have or have I missed the point of your question sorry

Hi Gavin, The modem will mount to the wall, with the cables connected on the back, there is enough space

The cable exit at 90 to the back of the modem, also "L" shapped so you cant attach it flush to the wall.

I used some plug board hooks to attach mine within a network cabinet.

Alternatively maybe use some right angled ethernet adapter plugs and saw off the bottom ledge.

I think the L shape adapters might be the way to go.

Is there a work around so I can frig the Vodafone VoIP to work off the GPON (like spark etc) and just buy a run of the mill router then

Nope

Is it delivered over a different VLAN or something? Could you not just connect the 'WAN' port of the VF router to the LAN of a wall mountable router? I feel like that should probably work, just not someyhing VF would support.

Get a Mikrotik RB2011 and wall mount.

You can get a different router to the Spark supplied one if you would like to mount it flush. Setup is pretty strait foward with most brands and models but you may want to consult an expert if your not confident or need advice on the correct type of router.

Another alternative as mentioned is right angled RJ45 plugs. Generally these are hard to come by and only seem to be sold from dodgy online exporters like eBay and Aliexpress. You could terminate the RJ45s leaving out the cable jacket so that they can bend but do this at your own risk as you could degrade the quality of your network if you get it wrong. Also this requires tools and knowhow so you may need to consult an installer.

The issue is the VoIP line.
Vodafone have elected to use CPE not the ONT Voice Ports.
This means if the OP wants to use the landline, they must use the VF supplied modem - end of story.

Perhaps a good idea would be to install a cabinet or small cupboard, or even a book case to give you a spot to sit the router. Yes those Huawei things dont stay put very well.

The whole setup should be both secure and accessible, so I just can't believe they put an ONT in a bedroom. At least you could try to run a cable under the floor to a suitable space to sit the router, and that could be the spot you use as a hub for any future additional LAN cables. It may be possible to drill through the floor inside the wall instead of running cables on the surface of the wall, then just make a hole the size of a flushbox to fish out the cable from inside the wall. A bit of risk, but minimise that by drilling a smaller pilot hole to make sure the big drill hole is hidden inside the wall.

Time to find a new industry!

Hi all,

Thanks for all the advice,

I've managed to come up with a solution. The modem has been moved to the TV room and jammed down behind the TV unit and using the ethernet cable that was run for the TV box, this is now the WAN connection and a shorter cable used to connect the TV. The phone is now next to the TV /modem so that's that sorted.

With the modem being in the front of the house, i ran down to Noel Leemings and picked up at wifi repeater/extender for cost +7%, so now the back of the house is all good...

As for the GPON install, im really happy that i put it in a place that is totally out of the way. The (her) kitchen has rimu flooring so there wasn't a hope in hell i was letting the install boys drill holes in the bare floors.

Thanks for all the advice, all i need now is to work out why the fibre downloads at 20ish for the last couple of days instead of 30MB/s....
