We have a TL-Wr702N in client mode. The speed is rubbish! When we have down a speed test it can be less than 1mbs. When we connect the Ethernet cable we easily get 100mbs. When you compare the speed test images on download the TL-Link spikes badly whereas the cable is a flat line generally. Any ideas. Was thinking to going to TL-Link 822? Any thoughts?

Have you tried another device with it isolate if it is infact the TL-WR702N or another device. And also perhaps check the channels.

If you are in an apartment in the city with about 25 other 2.4 Ghz networks around you I don't doubt you will only get 1-2 mbps.

I also suspect that because its a tiny weeny unit so the xmit power wont be very high if you can increase it it may have better results.

First determine if interference is causing the issues. The problem may not be your router.

If you have an android device download wifi analyzer, this will show you the wifi signals around your place.
I found at my Mum's house her neighbour and her both had the same SSID (Netcomm Wireless) this was causing issues for our Chromecast and the smart phone when upstairs. I have since changed her SSID, I've yet to discuss with her the improvement.

Also change your wifi to the least congested channel.

My 2 cents.

Without knowing your actual problem it's hard to offer a solution.

Your problem sounds entirely like a WiFi one. Depending on your environment there may not actually be a fix short of buying a 5GHz capable router if your problem is 2.4GHz saturation related. Buying a new 2.4GHz only router may not improve performance.

What basic WiFi fault finding steps have you taken? I'm assuming right now the answer is none?

We downloaded the wifi analyser. I think we were getting interference from a wifi printer on a static ip. We changed that to auto and the signal improved. There does seem to be a bit in the neighbourhood according to the analyser.

A printer connected to your network will NOT be the cause of the problem. Changing that to DHCP will not affect WiFi in any way so is not the cause of your issue.

Okay, that is interesting. Could it be how the pc interfaces with it via Ethernet? Also I have heard this mini routers can be quite slow.

Without knowing a lot more about your setup- including what problem exactly you're trying to solve with the use of this as a bridge it's pretty hard to offer any real advice.

We have a miktotik 951 wireless router which we recently installed as the Spark one died. The router is connected to ufb. One day the TP link which is hooked into the pc started running really slow. We were trying to figure out why. In an another post we got some excellent advice to set up the miktotik. When we connected the PC to the mikrotik directly we achieved some excellent speeds. At the moment I am wondering if the 702n is limited and whether we should go to the 822 or a PCI wireless adapter. The boy uses the PC for gaming.

The 702n isn't really intended for the purpose of which you're trying to use it. While it supports that, it's main use is in a scenario such as hotel where only cabled Ethernet is available.

What signal strength does the 702n show in the Mikrotik? How far away are you?

At the end of the day a cabled Ethernet connection is always vastly superior to wireless, no matter how good the wireless (as wireless is always a half duplex medium). Have you considered Ethernet over power adapters?

Okay according to the mikrotik the TL-Link 702n has a signal of  -64 the laptop has a signal of -63

Doing a speed test we have a download speed of 4.04 mbps on the TL- Link and 34.4 mbps on the laptop.

The tl_Link has lots of spikes in it!
