Hi there
Fibre coming soon (amazing saga with Chorus/VF – another day) and just wanting to check my proposed simple setup with youse guys …
- ONT will be inside, on lounge room wall in corner.
- I already have Netgear Nighthawk D7000 AC1900 unit.
- I assume I’ll plug Ethernet cable straight from ONT to “Internet” port on D7000. I assume there is no need for me to use the router provided by VF? See question e) below.
- D7000 will provide WiFi.
- The four Ethernet ports on the D7000 will run 4 underfloor CAT6 cables to points in the house:
- 2 to bedroom/offices where I’ll put a 4 port switch on each to run computers and printers.
- 1 to other loungeroom location to 4 port switch to run TV/various_boxes (AppleTV, Sky) etc
- … and if need be, 1 to far corner of the house to drive some sort of wireless repeater technology …
So, my questions are:
- Any comments on the above? Any improvements given this is a rented property and while I may stay 5 years, I may only stay a few …
- Any suggestions on the wireless repeater tech in the far corner of the house? I will wait and try first, but if still required then …?
- The 4 port hubs – I was simply going to get $21 TP-LINK units – should I be getting anything different. Does CAT6 need something else?
- If I wanted the computing/printing devices to be on a local network (maybe so I can add a backup device all computers can access), would the D7000 create that or is more required?
- I have local landline which will be running off the ONT I guess – does that wire to the ONT, or is there another device which would plug into one of the D7000 ports or do I have to use the router provided by VF with the fibre connection?
Any other thoughts?
TIA
