Hi there

Fibre coming soon (amazing saga with Chorus/VF – another day) and just wanting to check my proposed simple setup with youse guys …

 

1. ONT will be inside, on lounge room wall in corner.
2. I already have Netgear Nighthawk D7000 AC1900 unit.
3. I assume I’ll plug Ethernet cable straight from ONT to “Internet” port on D7000. I assume there is no need for me to use the router provided by VF? See question e) below.
4. D7000 will provide WiFi.
5. The four Ethernet ports on the D7000 will run 4 underfloor CAT6 cables to points in the house:

    

    

   1. 2 to bedroom/offices where I’ll put a 4 port switch on each to run computers and printers.
   2. 1 to other loungeroom location to 4 port switch to run TV/various_boxes (AppleTV, Sky) etc
   3. … and if need be, 1 to far corner of the house to drive some sort of wireless repeater technology …

    

So, my questions are:

 

1. Any comments on the above? Any improvements given this is a rented property and while I may stay 5 years, I may only stay a few …
2. Any suggestions on the wireless repeater tech in the far corner of the house? I will wait and try first, but if still required then …?
3. The 4 port hubs – I was simply going to get $21 TP-LINK units – should I be getting anything different. Does CAT6 need something else?
4. If I wanted the computing/printing devices to be on a local network (maybe so I can add a backup device all computers can access), would the D7000 create that or is more required?
5. I have local landline which will be running off the ONT I guess – does that wire to the ONT, or is there another device which would plug into one of the D7000 ports or do I have to use the router provided by VF with the fibre connection?

Any other thoughts?
